Homes and Garden July 2011Accompanied by a complimentary Kitchen & Bathroom Living magazine

DYNASTIC DYNAMICS
With her creative genes and upbringing, Sophie Conran has a confident style; for her West Sussex manor house, she has adopted her distinctive ‘mix and match’ approach to decorating, and listened to – if not always taken – the advice of her family.

LOYALTY SCHEME
When cosmetic dentist Mark Hughes needed a designer for his new home, a converted Victorian school in Battersea, he turned to Christopher Prain, who had worked for him before, and together they devised a modern, largely monochromatic interior.

OLD-FASHIONED TRIUMPH
Planted almost exclusively with old roses, the walled garden of Beaufront Castle, Northumberland, reaches a peak in June and July with an intoxicating mixture of colour and scent whose intensity justifies the limitations of its range and flowering period.

HOSPITALITY SUITE
The designer owner of this 1900s house in Essex, who often entertains friends from all over the world, extended it, restyled the façade and reconfigured the interior to make it as adaptable as possible for that purpose.

PROVENÇAL PROGRESS
In a stylistic about-turn, design duo Bruno and Dominique Lafourcade abandoned their traditional Provençal country home in favour of a cavernous Sixties warehouse, where they have put into practice a new ‘soft modernism’.

PLUS: Expert design ideas for small gardens; Johanna Thornycroft meets Corinne Laurie and sister Louise Unger, founders of The Camouflage Company; and Part 2 of our guide to the country’s most talented designers of bespoke furniture.

The July issue of HOUSE & GARDEN is available now.
