The World of Interiors - December 2011THE WORLD OF INTERIORS DECEMBER ISSUE – 30TH ANNIVERSARY ISSUE

RUPERT THOMAS’ ROOM BY ROOM:
Rupert Thomas selects key styles and settings favoured by The World of Interiors over the last 30 years, featured as a special editorial supplement inside the magazine. Categories include Sitting Rooms; Grottoes and gardens; Eating and entertaining; Bathrooms; Halls and entrances; Offices, attics, studies and studios – behind the scenes; Bedrooms; Kitchens, including Elizabeth David’s summer kitchen, photographed August 1993, and Frida Kahlo photographed 1989 and Pierre & Gilles’s Paris kitsch-en photographed 1995; and finally Artists at Home.

THREE’S COMPANY
The triumvirate behind Les Trois Garçons restaurant, a paean to decorative excess in east London, have now trained their combined Swedish, Malaysian and French sights on a château in the Vendée. ‘Less whimsical’ the décor may be, but is this sleepy region ready for anatomical models behind the sofa and a T-Rex in the conservatory?

MID-CENTURY MODIFIED
Peter Shire has electrified the quiet Modernist livery of his home in Los Angeles – a listed single-storey house build by his father in the 1950s – with high-key trimmings of turquoise, yellow and toffee-apple red. It’s perfectly in keeping with a man whose bold furniture and ceramics achieved fame in the 1980s through Memphis, the Italian design collective.

HOT METAL TYPES
Marc Hart works for a building society, but memories of his Wiltshire childhood and the happy times spent with his great-uncle, the village blacksmith, make him long to fire up Aldbourne’s forge once more. With the anvil silent now for 30years and the historic scrap turning rusty, time is running out for the protégé – but the craft is ‘deep down in me, it’s ingrained’, he tells Ros Byam Shaw.

The December 2011 issue of The World of Interiors is available now.

House & Garden - December 2011HOUSE & GARDEN DECEMBER ISSUE PLUS GOURMET SUPPLEMENT DESIGN IDEAS
Jennifer Goulding discovers how three design experts decorate their own homes for Christmas, including Ben Pentreath’s regency house in west Dorset; Solenne de la Fouchardiere’s modern loft apartment in east London; and Grania Cavendish’s Victorian family seat, Holker Hall in Cumbria.

INSIDE OUT AND OUTSIDE IN
Deep in the woods in upstate New York, a timber cabin is the product of many years’ architectural dreaming, and it sits in gentle sympathy with its surroundings.

POSTAL ORDER
Johanna Thornycroft meets the architect owner of a former London sorting office who has respected its utilitarian history in her design, while adding the comfort and softness required for family living.

BURTON AGNES HALL
At Burton Agnes Hall, East Yorkshire, Simon and Olivia Cunliffe-Lister and their family festoon the Elizabethan mansion, including the garden topiary, with festive decorations, in preparation for Christmas visitors.

MULTICULTURAL MANUFACTURE
Based in their Brussels family home, Anne-Marie Midy and Jorge Almada - French and Mexican respectively – design modern furniture and accessories that are made using traditional techniques by craftsmen in Mexico, displayed to maximum effect in their house.

HOUSE & GARDEN GOURMET
A very special supplement including 40 delicious recipes for Christmas, our pick of the best champagnes, fine wines, spirits and non-alcoholic drinks, plus perfect presents for food lovers, the best of British produce and appetising new cookery books.

Plus autumn and winter structure in the garden with sculptural seed heads; Olivia Gregory finds stylish Christmas presents for £50 or less; shop online using favourite websites for easy Xmas gifting; and Cathy Strongman looks to tradition to find eco inspiration for the modern-day festive season.

The December issue of HOUSE & GARDEN is available now
