Essays by Andreas Adam, Paul Goldberger & Kent Lydecker
Edited by Thomas Kramer
Synopsis: New York…but not quite as you pictured it. Here, in New York In Postcards 1880 – 1980 you will find an entirely new perspective. Quirky and quintessential, the history of one of the world’s most iconic cities, unfolds via the picture postcard. With over 900 images selected from the world’s largest collection of New York postcards examples trace the stylistic history of the postcard and the cultural history of New York.
The cards are arranged by subject and geographic area, bringing to life the ambience of particular eras as almost every aspect of New York City is depicted over the course of 100 years. Street scenes, architectural landmarks, lush gardens, cars, trains, trams, everyday life, and historical events presented in a range of media from archival photographs, to drawings and paintings, all provide an extraordinary perspective. The book is enhanced with essays by architecture critic Paul Goldberger and art historian Kent Lydecker as they discuss the architectural history of New York and the cultural history of the picture postcards.
This assemblage is drawn from the vast collection of Andreas Adam who began collecting New York postcards in 1960’s.
