MARY PORTAS OPENS A NEW SHOP SUPPORTING SAVE THE CHILDREN IN PRIMROSE HILL

Mary Portas and Save the Children have done it again, and what’s more, it’s just in time for Christmas; the season of goodwill! Following the success of ‘Mary’s Living & Giving Shop supporting Save the Children’ shops in Stockbridge, Edinburgh and Westbourne Grove, London, Mary’s third ‘Living & Giving Shop supporting Save the Children’ will open its Primrose Hill doors on Saturday 18 December 2010 at 11am. There will be the obligatory mince pies and mulled wine, as well as the dulcet tones of The Sylvia Young Theatre School who will be on hand to share a few carols.

Already causing a buzz amongst the local community and fashion insiders, the concept, designed by Mary’s agency, Yellowdoor, is breaking away from tradition and will be based around ‘The Home’. On entering, you are welcomed into the ‘Reception Room’ where Rupert Blanchard, the ‘King of Upcycling’ has added his touch to the customised till point. Take a pew in the ‘Living Room’ and take in the shabby chic furniture that is for sale, before heading into the ‘Library’ where you will be greeted by a bejewelled moose. Mary has certainly sprinkled her magic dust in the ‘Conservatory’, with its Saturday Market full of unique, and some exclusive, local finds. In addition to the bargain designer clothing, jewellery and homeware donated by brands such as Nina Campbell, Jessica Light, Kangol Headwear, Fred Perry and J Brand, this quirky ‘English house’ will be selling everything from vintage clothing and local crafts to potted plants; not forgetting the ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ which is filled with original Rob Ryan works of art.

The charity is appealing to the fashion industry, book publishers, local crafts people and homeware designers to donate stock for the store launch. All money raised will go towards Save the Children helping to save children’s lives here in the UK and abroad.

Chris Coe, Head of Retail at Save the Children says: “We have been delighted with the response to both the Mary’s Living & Giving Shops already open in London and Edinburgh. Not only have very generous donations been coming in from premium brands and design houses, but the locals have really helped to shape these shops. Given the local interest at Primrose Hill even before the doors have opened, we feel sure this will be a similar success story.”

“When I first donned my Save the Children tabard for Mary Queen of Charity Shops, I had no idea that just over a year later I’d be opening my third permanent Living & Giving shop for the charity.

I wanted to prove that charity shops could be as good a place to shop as high street retailers; well, I think we’ve gone one step further – I reckon they’re better. I am so excited to be setting up shop in Primrose Hill – there is a brilliant community already and I want local artists, craftspeople, designers, jam makers, cake bakers and shoppers to come a be a part of Living & Giving, after all, it’s a space for you, the local community.”

Westfield London’s Christmas Choir Competition
Kids from across London are warming up their voices as they gear up for an exciting school Christmas choir competition at Westfield London. Seventeen local schools are taking part in the first of an annual competition, which will see school choirs battle it out throughout December ahead of a live final in the centre on Friday 10th December with presentations to winners on Thursday 16th December.

The choirs will be judged on three categories – Best Dressed, Best Performance and Best Choir and the 3 winning schools will take home a cheque for £1,000.
