Short description:

Picasso The Mediterranean Years
is a major exhibition curated by Picasso’s celebrated biographer John Richardson and his grandson Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, organised around works from the private collection of the Picasso family that have come to be known as Picasso’s Picassos. In the post-war years, Picasso began to spend more and more time in the South of France, marking a renewal of family life and a return to the Mediterranean heritage that had nourished some of the most important stylistic changes in his past work. This exhibition brings together paintings, sculptures, linocuts and ceramics produced during this period and offers the unique opportunity to see some of Picasso’s most intimate works, shedding light on the artist’s private faces in the 1950s.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, AUTOBAHN

Search is on for a road trip movie star to win a car
Five minutes behind a camera could put you and a friend on a 5000km European-wide road trip adventure, behind the wheel of either a new Renault Mégane Coupé-Cabriolet or the new two-seater coupé-roadster Renault Wind coupé-roadster which you could win!

Renault is launching Summer 2010 by creating a road movie in which people cast themselves for the leading role. Competing against two-person teams from seven other countries, both members of the successful UK team will be challenged to undertake different tasks during a sun-drenched four-week long (14th June – 9th July) trip which is being filmed for broadcast every day on www.renault.tv and later in the year on TV.

Budding adventurers have until May 14th to upload their audition video via http://www.verygoodtrip.renault.com and read the terms and conditions – you need a full driving licence! Visitors to the site can vote for their favourite team with the final selection made by the Very Good Trip team. The successful UK team will embark on an action-packed, expenses paid, driving tour of Europe during which they’ll test their creativity and willingness to go beyond their limits in a series of challenges, all caught on camera.

Renault is challenging all participants to become stars in their car by attracting the largest possible audience for their European escapades. During a series of secret yet carefully selected pit stops, teams will undertake two challenges and test a local ritual before sharing their experiences via Facebook, Flickr and Twitter.

The team which attracts the largest following during the month will drive away in a new Renault Mégane Coupé-Cabriolet and Renault Wind coupé-roadster worth more than £40,000 plus a year’s worth of fuel and insurance.
Renault Wind coupé-roadster is the perfect car to enjoy a summer road trip. The two-seater coupé-roadster features an innovative electric roof which opens in just 12 seconds and doesn’t take up essential luggage space. In fact, the Renault Wind is the only car of its class to provide just as much luggage space (270dm3 VDA) whatever the position of the roof. The new 2010 Mégane Coupé-Cabriolet also features a fully electronic folding hardtop glass roof, ideal for enjoying the sun on windy days and also a huge boot space of 417 litres, ideal for those intending to pack a large suitcase for their adventure.

You’ll be able to follow the exploits of the Very Good Trip team live on http://www.verygoodtrip.renault.com Highlights will also be shown on www.renault.tv and on Canalsat channel 349 and Sky Guide 883 later this year.

THE SEARCH IS ON FOR THE FIRST EVER UK ROUTE 66 AMBASSADOR
The Chicago and Illinois Tourist office has launched a nationwide competition in search of the first ever Illinois Route 66 Ambassador. Having recently conducted a survey into the holiday habits of British tourists, research found that 86% sought more unique, experience-driven holidays that go beyond beach style vacations. Long-haul treks such as the Great Wall of China, thrill-seeking adventures like the climb to Everest Base Camp and iconic road trips such as Route 66, were top of the list.

To support this new insight, the Chicago and Illinois Tourist Office are recruiting the first ever Route 66 Ambassador from the UK. They will travel along legendary Route 66, experiencing everything it has to offer and then present their findings and recommendations to the British public via an online blog, consisting of photos and video snippets, housed on the www.gochicago.com <http://www.gochicago.com> website. This will let people see firsthand what’s on offer in a fun and engaging way, as well as the chance to learn everything they need to know about the route from a UK perspective. Perfect!

The winner will have the opportunity to travel to Chicago and Illinois for one week and experience a real slice of American pie. Often referred to as the “Mother Road,” the route includes an expansive mix of metropolitan chic from its start in Chicago, to vintage charm at attractions across the state, like Shea’s Gas Station Museum in Springfield and the Polk-a-Dot Drive diner in Braidwood.

So if you are a budding photographer, the next big thing in the world of presenting, a tourism guru or just enjoy the feeling of the wind and nothing but the open road in front of you, then this could be the start of something exciting.

Interested? Then all you have to do is log on to http://www.gochicago.com to nominate yourself. Nominations take place from 4th - 23rd May, then the general public will have three weeks to cast their votes as to who they think will make the best Illinois Route 66 Ambassador. So it’s up to you to drum up support from your friends, family and colleagues and get them to vote for you to be considered part of the final five who will make it through to the judging panel.

Hurry, start your adventure today!

*Survey was carried out by http://www.opinionmatters.com on behalf of the Chicago and Illinois Tourist Office, February 1-10, 2010. There were 2,100 respondents in total. Results are based on adults aged 25-34.

WHEN BRITS SEE ITALIAN FOOD THAT’S AMORE FINDS OLIVE SURVEY

Britain is a nation of foodie ‘Italophiles’ according to research from olive magazine, which found that Italian food is our favourite international cuisine with almost all of us cooking it at home. A survey of nearly 2,500 BBC Magazines readers was conducted for olive magazine’s June issue, which features the best Italian recipes, restaurants and travel.

Some of the key findings are:
· Over 40% of people chose Italian as their favourite foreign food, with 93% cooking Italian recipes at home. Indian food was the second favourite international cuisine, at 16%;

· Pasta is our favourite Italian dish, favoured by 26.5% of people;

· Our favourite sauce on pasta is Bolognaise, followed by carbonara and then pesto;

· Lasagne is our second favourite Italian recipe with 15% of votes, ahead of pizza, at 14%;

· These were followed by risotto, ice-cream, and then Parma ham.

· In terms of pizza toppings, the simple margherita is our favourite, followed by salami and quattro formaggi.

· We also love the lingo - although the teaching of Italian is not commonplace in British schools, it is still our second-favourite language, only just pipped by French.

According to Christine Hayes, editor of olive magazine: “Culinary fads come and go, but Italian cooking is now part of our food D.N.A. It’s remarkable to think that just 40 years ago few British people had heard of ‘Bolognaise’ and now it’s a favourite across the land.”

June’s olive magazine is on sale now, priced at £3.40

i) The findings are the results of two surveys of BBC Magazines readers. One was completed in April 2010 and the other in January 2010. The April survey was conducted with 2,479 readers and the January survey was 2061 readers of BBC Magazines

i) olive is the stylish, monthly magazine for food lovers with an emphasis on getting great value. It has 93,300 monthly readers according to the last Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) figures.

THE LOVELY LADIES - A SPECIAL ONE-OFF PERFORMANCE IN COVENT GARDEN

On Wednesday 12th May 2010, enjoy The Lovely Ladies, a delightful new one-act opera, proudly sponsored by Covent Garden London, the capital’s home of performing arts.

British composer Peter Cowdrey and librettist Hamish Robinson created this witty opera based on the wine diaries of Michael Broadbent, the celebrated critic who started wine auctions at Christie’s. All profits from this special Gala performance, which will be an annual event, will go to Maggie’s Caring Cancer Centres.

As one of London’s most important cultural districts, Covent Garden is an area synonymous with performance and musical heritage. The decision to sponsor ‘Lovely Ladies’ follows the success of other charity events, including ‘Music for Mums’ in support of Marie Curie Cancer Care and Superbusking, which saw talents such as the Stereophonics and Jamie Cullum perform live secret gigs in the Market Building last December in aid of the charity Crisis.

Bev Churchill commented, “Covent Garden London is proud to support this special one-off performance of The Lovely Ladies, in aid of Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres. As the home of opera and performance in the West End, Covent Garden sends its best wishes to all involved with this very worthwhile cause.”

LE CAFÉ DU MARCHÉ BRINGS A FLAVOUR OF FRANCE TO THE HISTORICAL STREETS OF CLERKENWELL

Located just off Charterhouse Square, which held the Catholic monastery ‘La Grande Chartreuse’ in 1371, is another historically French institution - Le Café Du Marché. Established in 1986, and housed under one roof, lies 3 restaurants of the same proprietor but each with a unique flair and ambience.

Le Café Du Marché is a romantic restaurant hidden down a secluded cobbled mews, Le Grenier Du Café is the upstairs dining room and Le Rendezvous is the neighbouring daytime brasserie.

Le Café Du Marché transports guests back to the elegant restaurants of French towns with candles, classic furniture and crisp white tablecloths. In the evening, the sounds of a double bass player and pianist complement the atmosphere, perfect for a celebration or intimate dinner. Friendly staff assist with the French, two or three course, fixed price, à la carte menu which changes every five weeks to bring you the very best seasonal produce.

The menu at all three restaurants is lovingly created by Executive Chef Simon Cottard and Head Chef Phil Hayes, they employ a strict philosophy of using seasonal ingredients wherever possible and the frequently changing menu reflects this fresh approach to French provincial cooking. Dishes such as Soupe de Poisson and La Cote de boeuf with a classic Sauce Béarnaise grace the authentic menu.

An extensive and challenging wine list, carefully compiled by Front of House Manager Roberto Muscas, accompanies the dishes and, with over 50 to choose from, there is something to suit every taste.
Le Café Du Marché acknowledges the importance of a good end to a great meal. Their classic French cheeseboard is a popular choice, with guests choosing from a range of ten cheeses including Vacherin Mont d'Or, Beaufort and Reblochon. For those in the mood for something sweet, choose from seasonal, daily changing desserts including Tart aux Fruits, Rhubarb and Raspberry Trifle and Sorbet or Ice-cream of the day, all freshly prepared, on site, each day by Pastry Chef Keith Davis.

Le Grenier Du Café is an ideal private dining space, housed directly above Le Café. Serving either a three course, fixed price, à la carte menu or a specially tailored buffet menu, this space is perfect for wedding receptions, birthday’s or business functions.

The neighbouring Le Rendezvous brasserie gives a more relaxed feel to French dining. Open from 12:00pm - 2:30pm, individually priced dishes are written on blackboards and most dishes are accompanied by frites instead of sautéed or mashed potato. Le Rendezvous boasts a long marble bar where staff serve wines by the glass or bottle and the aroma of freshly ground coffee fills the air. Reservations are not necessary and tables are allocated on a first come first served basis.

At all three venues, the same ethics apply – classic French cooking using seasonal produce, in relaxing and elegant surroundings with friendly staff led by General Manager, Carlos Ruiz. Carlos has been involved with the restaurant since it opened some 24 years ago and adopts a familial attitude towards his staff lending to the warm atmosphere at all three venues. Whether dropping into Le Rendezvous for Steak Frites with a business partner, celebrating a golden wedding anniversary in Le Grenier Du Café or enjoying a first date in Le Café Du Marché, there is something to suit all moods.
