THE APP THAT COULD MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE…

Charity launches iPhone app to help beat breast cancer

Pioneering breast cancer charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer is tackling the disease head-on with the launch of a groundbreaking new iPhone application – the free-to-download iBreastCheck.

In response to the ongoing need to encourage breast awareness, the pioneering charity has launched iBreastCheck, the UK’s first app designed to encourage women to be breast aware. It aims to increase the number of women who regularly check their breasts, improve understanding of the signs and symptoms to look out for, as well as build awareness of the risk factors associated with the disease and what women can do to reduce them.

Bernie Nolan, who is currently being treated for the disease, commented,
“This is an incredible development from Breakthrough Breast Cancer. I only wish it had been thought of sooner. The earlier breast cancer is found, the better the chance of beating it, which is why I would urge every woman to get into the habit of being breast aware and following Breakthrough Breast Cancer’s simple Touch Look Check message - it could make all the difference.”

Breast cancer is the UK’s most commonly diagnosed cancer with nearly 46,000 women diagnosed each year. Around 1,000 women die of breast cancer every month in the UK.

Free to download from iTunes, iBreastCheck will feature the charity’s award-winning Touch Look Check (TLC) breast awareness message, which will be supported by video and images to explain what women need to look for when checking themselves for anything unusual.

Users will also be able to take ‘The Risk Report’ – a unique and interactive quiz which enables women to enter details about themselves to asses their own risk of breast cancer, based on family history, lifestyle and environmental factors. With this information, a report will be generated advising women of which risk factors might be most relevant to them.

In a bid to increase the number of women regularly checking their breasts, the app also features an in-built alert system enabling women to set a personalised reminder to themselves to check their breasts at a time and date convenient for them.

Edith Bowman, DJ & Presenter, said, "My mum survived breast cancer, we were lucky to catch it so early, so the work that Breakthrough Breast Cancer does is incredibly close to my heart.

“Many women aren’t checking their breasts because they either don’t think they are at risk, don’t know how to check themselves or just simply forget to do it. It’s fantastic that Breakthrough Breast Cancer has developed iBreastCheck specifically with all these considerations in mind. I'll have it to remind me to check and hopefully thousands of women will do the same."

For more information about iBreastCheck and Breakthrough Breast Cancer visit http://www.ibreastcheck.com/ or http://www.breakthrough.org.uk/

The iBreastcheck was developed in partnership with web design agency Torchbox.

SAVE THE BRITISH APPLE AND CELEBRATE APPLE DAY:
Thursday, 21st October 2010
British Apple Pioneer, Clippy, joins forces with Fortnum & Mason

for a FREE Apple Preserving Masterclass

Fortnum & Mason, First Floor Demonstration Kitchen, 2.00pm

Apple day is the pinnacle of the British apple season which is now in full swing. To celebrate the British apple harvest, Fortnum & Mason invites the public to a Masterclass with Clippy (aka Michelle McKenna), founder of Clippy’s Apples, advocate of the British apple and pioneer in the world of preserves. In time for Halloween, Clippy will teach the secrets behind making Toffee Apple Jam.

Founded in 2008 by Clippy using apples from her back garden, Clippy’s Apples is the award-winning home of British-apple based jams, jellies, chutneys & relishes which are lovingly handmade in small batches. As well as Clippy’s Apples products being available from Fortnum & Mason, they can also be purchased from Ocado (http://www.ocado.com/). Clippy’s passion for British apples began when she found out that two-thirds of British apple orchards have been lost since 1970 and Clippy, together with fiancé Paul Gorman, wants to reverse this disturbing trend.

The Fortnum & Mason Masterclass is part of a nationwide tour which sees Clippy ‘Preserving the Nation’ in some of the UK’s most prestigious cookery schools. Clippy teaches her students how to turn apples into chutney or quince into jelly in a matter of hours, making the most of local produce and using a range of exciting ingredients from chilli to chocolate. It all makes sense in these ‘lean’ times. For UK tour dates please visit: http://www.preservingthenation.org/

The bad news about British apples - and why we need to buy British!

We are losing apple orchards at an alarming rate. Data from Natural England shows that the orchard area throughout England has declined by 63% since 1950. Wales lost 94% between 1958 and 1992. For some counties the impact is devastating. Devon lost 89% of its orchards between 1946-2003 and Kent 92% during the same period*.

In 2007 we imported nearly 70% of our apples**. Apples from the southern hemisphere and other far away places fill our supermarket shelves – even in autumn, the height of our apple season.

In 1987, there were 1,500 apple growers; in 2003, there were only 500.

And the good news!

Hundreds of Community Orchards are being created up and down the country, more people are planting fruit trees in their gardens, micro cider-makers are flourishing, old traditional orchards are being valued and conserved by Natural England and others for the richness of wild life they support and thousands visit Apple Day events.

TELEGRAPH MAGAZINE LAUNCHES SEARCH FOR BRITAIN’S BEST SMALL SHOPS IN THE 2010 SHOP AWARDS
On 9th October 2010, Telegraph Magazine and retail columnist Mary Portas will launch a nationwide search to find the Best Small Shops in Britain. Readers of Telegraph Magazine will be invited to vote for their favourite small shop in 10 different categories, for the Telegraph’s annual Shop Awards.

Now in its fifth year the focus of this year’s Shop Awards is a celebration of the small, independent retailers on Britain’s high streets. Categories will include women’s fashion, men’s fashion, interiors, health and beauty, food, wine, books, children and gardening, which are all subjects that Telegraph Magazine covers each week. In addition the tenth category will be the best corner shop or village shop.

Readers will be able to vote online, by visiting Telegraph.co.uk/shopawards or by filling in a form in the magazine. All voters will be entered into a prize draw to win one of several prizes including a one-night stay at Lime Wood Hotel and a two-night stay at The Martinhal in the Algarve. Telegraph.co.uk/shopawards goes live on October 9th.

For the first time this year retailers will also be invited to nominate their own shop for an award. Every retailer who self-nominates will be entered into a draw to win one of two Mary Portas Retail Scholarships, worth over £1,000.

The three shops in each category with the most votes will form a shortlist, from which a panel of Telegraph experts including Mary Portas and Telegraph Magazine editor Michele Lavery will select a winner.

The awards will be promoted in The Daily Telegraph and Telegraph Magazine and on Telegraph.co.uk throughout October and November. Voting closes on December 10th and the final results will be announced at an awards ceremony in London and in Telegraph Magazine in early 2011.

Michele Lavery, editor of Telegraph Magazine, said:
“This year we have chosen to recognise and celebrate the smaller, independent retailers which make our high streets such vibrant and interesting places to visit. The Best Small Shops in Britain awards are a fantastic opportunity for our readers to tell us about those independent shops that make a difference to their lives, be it through the quality and variety of products they offer or the personal and expert customer service.”

Mary Portas, columnist for Telegraph Magazine, said:
“Independent shops are part of our cultural heritage and to lose our brilliant one-off retailers would be a national tragedy. We have to rally around our little independents who are not just fighting for custom but for their very lives. That is why it is so important to shout about the smaller stores so that they can continue to offer that unique and specialist service.

CRÈME DE LA MER THE LIP BALM

WHERE DOES YOUR LIP BALM TAKE YOU?

The coveted Crème de la Mer Lip Balm is repackaged this winter with an eye catching silver-effect lid. This sought after lip balm is one winter skin essential that will ensure your lips are kept smooth, soft and feel plumper. Luxurious, soothing and comforting, The Lip Balm more than lives up to its promise. Working on contact to soften roughness and relieve dryness. Worn all day, lips are constantly soothed. Applied at night, lips appear renewed by morning. This is one Winter skincare essential which you won’t want to be seen without no matter where you go.

“The thin, delicate skin on the lips has a minimal moisture barrier; so it is vulnerable to wind, cold, heat and dryness,” says Loretta Miragilia, Vice President of Research & Development at La Mer. “Lip skin turns over at four times the rate of facial skin, leaving lips susceptible to skin that is ragged and rough. We developed The Lip Balm specifically to provide superior protection and impart gentle, soothing yet highly effective benefits. As you would expect from Crème de la Mer, the end-result goes way beyond the ordinary.”

Crème de la Mer, The Lip Balm, 9g RRP £36.00 (€58.00)
