Along the way, get a taste of army rations, army training and army health and hygiene. Wellies or waterproof walking shoes are strongly recommended and ponchos will be available.

Bursting to the towers with tales of treachery and torture, passion and power and above all fascinating people, times and events, Warwick Castle is the number one attraction to experience preparations for battle, feel the weight of a sword and get a soldier's eye view from beneath a battle helmet with an entire castle-full of colourful characters and events. See lavishly decorated State Rooms, watch as a household prepares for a Victorian party and discover how electricity was generated over 100 years ago to light up the castle.
Outside visitors can also explore the 60 acres of landscaped grounds and gardens, which include the beautiful Peacock Garden and Conservatory, the Victorian Rose Garden and Pageant Field.

Severn Valley Railway

The Severn Valley Railway is a full-size standard-gauge railway line running regular steam-hauled passenger trains between Kidderminster in Worcestershire and Bridgnorth in Shropshire, a distance of 16 miles closely following the route of the meandering River Severn through the glorious Shropshire countryside.

The Railway was in the transport business from 1862 until 1963 and is full of interest with highlights including a crossing over the River Severn by means of the Victoria Bridge - a massive 200-foot single span, high above the water which, incidentally, features in the film 'The Thirty-nine Steps'.
As there are few roads in the Severn Valley, some of the views are only visible from the Railway and the scenery is varied and largely unspoiled, punctuated by the quaint 'olde worlde' charm of country stations, each one giving ready access to local villages and riverside walks.
On the 21st February, prepare to step back in time at a 1960’s transport day where there will be chance to see a variety of rare and fascinating vehicles from the period on display at all stations and the Engine House and Visitor & Education Centre will be open for visitors to explore the history of the railway.

Contact: Severn Valley Railway, Kidderminster Town Station, Comberton Hill, Kidderminster, Worcestershire, DY10 1QX. Visit the website for more information on fares and timetables: http://www.svr.co.uk/

Bodenham Arboretum
For those who would prefer to unwind on a relaxing stroll in the country, Bodenham Arboretum is a collection of over 2,700 trees set in 156 acres of Worcestershire countryside with 11 pools, four miles of footpaths and a working farm.

The epicentre of the Arboretum lies around a picturesque pool where many rare and ornamental trees can be seen in flower or fruit at all times of the year. The Grand Avenue, now in its infancy, is planted with Popes Seat Provenance Beech to mature in 200 years time. It stretches up the hillside to the higher reaches of the Arboretum where extensive views to the Clent Hills and surrounding countryside can be enjoyed.

Several miles of paths lead through acres of daffodils in early spring, and later primroses, bluebells and foxgloves line many of the woodland walks and plantations. The Laburnum Tunnel is one of the highlights for visitors in late May or early June. There are many lakes and pools exhibiting interesting aquatic features. Bridges provide access to the islands in the big pool, and seats throughout the Arboretum allow visitors to stop and rest awhile.

The arboretum is set within a working farm which has a herd of pedigree Hereford suckler cows and calves, and a flock of North Country mule ewes. The farm is in pasture, and grass is mown in the middle of the year for hay and silage for winter feed. There is also a collection of unusual purebred poultry and waterfowl with chicks in abundance in spring and summer.

Many visitors, particularly children, enjoy meeting the animals in their natural setting. Spring is a favourite time for visitors with new-born lambs bounding in the fields and cows with their calves at foot. Warwick Castle – let battle commence!
It’s best battle-boots forward for some seriously squelchy family fun on the Great Battle Walk (with mud) at Warwick Castle this February half term. Wannabe warriors can step into the shoes of a mediaeval battalion for a hands-on, feet first adventure trail around the castle grounds. Along the way, get a taste of army rations, army training and army health and hygiene. And like any self-respecting conscript you will be expected (and positively encouraged) to embrace the elements, throw caution to the “great” British weather and have fun in the inevitable winter mud.

Ongoing events include thrilling jousting tournaments, breathtaking birds of prey and the world's largest trebuchet in action.

All aboard the Severn Valley Railway

The Severn Valley Railway is a full-size standard-gauge railway line running regular steam-hauled passenger trains for the benefit of visitors and enthusiasts alike between Kidderminster in Worcestershire and Bridgnorth in Shropshire, a distance of 16 miles closely following the route of the meandering River Severn through the glorious countryside

The Railway was in the transport business as a through route for 101 years, from 1862 until 1963. The journey is full of interest with highlights including crossing the River Severn by means of the Victoria Bridge - a massive 200-foot single span, high above the water which, incidentally, features in the film 'The Thirty-nine Steps' with Robert Powell in the leading role.

As there are few roads in the Severn Valley, some of the views are only visible from the Railway and the scenery is varied and largely unspoiled, punctuated by the quaint 'olde worlde' charm of country stations, each one giving ready access to local villages and riverside walks.

Step back in time this half term at our 1960’s transport day on 21st February, offering the perfect family day out for the young and old alike. There will be a chance to see a variety of rare and fascinating vehicles from the period on display at all of our stations and the Engine House and Visitor & Education Centre will also be open for visitors to explore the history of the railway.
