KnightsMAKE THE MOST OF THE MAY BANK HOLIDAYS WITH ENGLISH HERITAGE
Britain's public holidays have become increasingly important to families looking for a fun and cost-effective chance to get away from it all here in the UK.

Emily Burns, Head of Events for English Heritage, explains: "We've always looked to provide families with great ways to spend quality time together. This is even more essential now as families are tightening their belts and looking to make the most of day trips. The May Bank Holidays are the ideal time for families to get out and about together and we've added a whole host of brand new events to make sure an even better time is had by all."

MAY DAY AT THE ALNWICK CASTLE
- Serf’s Up as Medieval Britain comes to Alnwick -

This May Day weekend, the sights, smells and sounds of Medieval Britain will resonate around the walls of the magnificent Alnwick Castle as its famous grounds become home to a medieval encampment.

The 13th Century Serf* Camp will be filled with medieval characters, cooking over an open fire, gossiping over leather work and armoury polishing or practicing their sword fighting and archery. There will be medieval dancing and music and at 3pm each day, the Lord High Marshal of all England will search for a champion knight with a Medieval Tournament. The participating knights will fight for the prize of the golden gauntlet and to be crowned the champion.

The medieval Castle – which is this year celebrating it’s 700th year as the home of the Percys, Earls and Dukes of Northumberland – has an intriguing past, intertwined with tales of medieval knights and heroes. It has its own celebrated ‘Knights Quest’ activities where children can learn the sword slaying tricks of a dragon slaying knight.

FROM PIGLET TO PLATE!

Schools in England team up with the Real Food Festival to

Compete in ‘The Real Sausage Challenge’
School Food Matters and the School Farms Network have teamed up with the Real Food Festival to create the ultimate competition for school children – The Real Sausage Challenge!

School farms from across the country are competing for the coveted title of Real Sausage Champion and have been rearing a piglet and then creating a sizzling sausage using their own unique recipe. Each school has been creating a presentation to illustrate their journey from weaner to sausage with the final three schools - one primary school and two secondary schools - travelling to Earls Court in London to present eight of their finished sausages to the judges, who include Raymond Blanc and Lawrence Dallaglio at the Real Food Festival on Friday 7th May 2010. The primary school and secondary school winners will be presented with their award and given a prestigious prize for their school farm, compliments of competition sponsors, Mears. Sacla,’ as the Festival Children’s sponsor, will also be providing a prize to the winner of the sausage taste off between the primary school and secondary school winners.

Pigs must be reared on the school farm, either bred on site or bought as weaners. Pupils must be involved in all the activities from rearing through to the design of the sausage mix and packaging. Stephanie Wood, from School Food Matters, says she has been delighted by the response to the competition. She says: "We are very excited about this competition and have had a fantastic response from the school farms. The Real Food Festival is all about quality food, prepared lovingly by small producers so we’re asking the schools to produce a festival-worthy sausage which will catch the eye and the taste buds of a panel of food experts and celebrity chefs. May the best sausage win!”

The Real Food Festival has established itself at the top of the food event calendar and is much, much more than a food or farmers market. The festival is packed with events for the whole family, from cooking demonstrations, sheep shearing and butter churning, to the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and some very friendly livestock! With 400 producers exhibiting, Real Food Festival visitors will have a chance to meet

Britain’s real food heroes, and discover food that is fresh, in season and produced with care that not only tastes fantastic but won't blow the budget either.

Phillip Lowery, founder of the Real Food Festival says: “Our festival is designed to encourage children to understand exactly what makes great food and what better way for them to see this than by producing their own great quality sausage and to compete against their peers”.

The Real Sausage Competition will take place on the Sacla’ stand (120) at the Real Food Festival on 7th May at 13.00. To find out more about the festival visit: www.realfoodfestival.co.uk.
