Montréal: Through the Looking Glass “If man doesn’t possess the power to shape the world to his liking, then he can at least tailor the lenses through which he sees it…”
- Georg Christoph Lichtenberg
Montréal, February 2010 – From now until December, twenty-three museums* will unite with a host of art galleries and libraries in Montréal to proclaim 2010 as the Year of Glass.
As part of the city-wide celebration entitled “Montréal, City of Glass 2010” a multitude of exhibitions, workshops and demonstrations dedicated to glass will be on offer to Montréalers and tourists alike.
Categorised into four themes – art, architecture, history and science – glass, in its many forms and uses will be the focus, bringing together some of the most internationally-renowned artists from the industry.
From the Louis C. Tiffany exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts to the stained glass window demonstrations at the Château Dufresne Museum and “Glass and the Solar house” at the Biosphere, there will be no shortage of breath-taking glass-themed events and activities taking place.
The concept of glass will also embed itself through the original creations of Montréal’s renowned fashion designers Philipe Dubuc and Laura Donefer. The duo, in collaboration with artisan glass blowers will create and host a one-off glass fashion show at The Belvedere of Montréal Science Centre on 29th May, sure to bring a unique twist to the proceeding.
Other popular cultural attractions in the city that will celebrate this crystalline year, include the Nuit Blanche on 27th February, the March Break and the Journees de la Culture held in September.

THE ART OF PUTTING ON A FINE SHOW - THE AFFORDABLE ART FAIR SPRING COLLECTION, 11 – 14 MARCH 2010
Take the formality out of the art world, specify a price range of £50 to £3,000 and bring together quality contemporary art and you have the art of putting on a fine show. This is the successful formula which the Affordable Art Fair (AAF) will bring to Battersea Park, London in March, along with a huge variety of paintings, photography, sculpture and original prints from a range of galleries – from the edgy, young and emerging to the well-established.
AAF underlined its position as one of the leading and most popular art fairs in the UK by welcoming a record 25,000 visitors (smashing the previous record of 22,800) and achieving sales of £4 million (the third best in its 10-year history) at the October 2009 Autumn Collection. Having now exceeded a total of £100 million in sales globally and seen over 650,000 art lovers pass through its doors (both seasoned collectors and first-time buyers), AAF is proof that there is a demand for accessible and affordable art.
AAF's formula is so successful it has become a global brand, with fairs now held in Bristol, Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, New York and Singapore as well as affiliate fairs in Sydney and Melbourne. Return rates are high – attracting everyone from celebrities, interior designers, art lovers and families – as each fair provides visitors with the chance to find a unique work of art to take home.

PUT SOME REGGAE REGGAE IN YOUR BELLY...
West Cornwall Pasty Co and Levi Roots join forces to create new fusion pasty
If you’re fed up with the cold spells hitting the UK and are pining for hotter climes, then West Cornwall Pasty Co has the perfect pick-me-up guaranteed to bring a little Caribbean heat into our lives.
The leading Cornish pasty retailer has joined forces with renowned entrepreneur, and ‘Dragons’ Den’ success story, Levi Roots to create a spicy Reggae Reggae Pasty.
The mouth-watering pasty, which is made with Levi’s Reggae Reggae Cooking Sauce, has been developed for West Cornwall Pasty Co and is now available at its 71 shops and kiosks across the UK.
The new pasty features hand crimped flaky pastry with tender pieces of chicken breast, red pepper, potato, onion, tomato, pineapple, jerk seasoning and finally a good splash of Reggae Reggae Cooking Sauce.
West Cornwall Pasty Co chief executive Richard Nieto said: “We’re delighted to introduce the Reggae Reggae Pasty. We’re wholly committed to developing exciting new products and we’re sure this will be a huge success with our customers. Levi and his team are very forward-thinking - it’s been great to work with such a flourishing brand with which we share great affinity.”
To complement the Reggae Reggae Pasty, West Cornwall Pasty Co has introduced a range of accompaniments, including sweet potatoes and Piri Piri potato wedges for those who prefer to add even more heat to their meal.
Reggae Reggae Sauce founder Levi Roots added: “Developing the new pasty for West Cornwall Pasty Co has been thoroughly exciting. It’s wonderful to see a fusion of flavours from Cornwall and the Caribbean! The sauce we have used within the new pasty has a kick of Scotch Bonnet chilli which is found in the original Reggae Reggae Sauce, but is packed with more juicy tomatoes and onions. It’s perfect with meat or vegetables, so when you’re not enjoying the flavour of the sauce in the new Reggae Reggae Pasty, you can serve it up at home and enjoy some Caribbean sunshine with all the family.”
To celebrate the new partnership, Levi Roots entertained lunchtime crowds outside West Cornwall Pasty Co’s Covent Garden shop on Friday 26th February, with songs from his latest album ‘Red Hot’.
ARCTIC EXPLORER MARTIN HARTLEY TO CAPTURE MOMENTS IN HISTORY WITH LEICA MP
Arctic explorer and photographer, Martin Hartley, left the UK last week equipped with a specially-tested LEICA MP camera with LEICA ELMARIT-M 24mm f/2.8 ASPH. lens as part of his expedition equipment – vital for capturing the historic photos during his latest journey to the North Pole for the Catlin Arctic Survey. Martin is one of three explorers on the 2010 Catlin Arctic Survey, which is focused on capturing scientific data on how CO2 affects marine life in the Arctic.
One of the world’s leading expedition photographers, Martin Hartley has documented 19 unique polar assignments and is one of the only professional photographers to have crossed the Arctic Ocean on foot and with dogs: Adventure Ecology Top of the World Trans-Arctic Expedition 2006, and Catlin Arctic Survey 2009 – an international collaboration between polar explorers and some of the world’s foremost scientific bodies to help determine how long the Arctic Ocean sea ice cover will remain a permanent feature of our planet.
Martin Hartley commented, “Despite 19 polar photographic assignments over the last 12 years, there are still ‘impossible’ images to capture. At the start of every expedition on the Arctic Ocean in late February/March, it is difficult to survive let alone operate a camera due to the severe conditions. Below minus 40 degrees Celsius, electronic circuits slow down and become unreliable. The mechanical LEICA MP will give me the best chance of capturing those elusive, extremely cold photographs this time, which may be our last opportunity to do so.”
The expedition will take three months from start to finish. The progress of the expedition, which commenced on 25 February 2010 starting from Canada, will be documented at www.catlinarcticsurvey.com http://www.catlinarcticsurvey.com/ and on a special micro-site at http://www.martinhartley.com/. Updates will also be communicated regularly via Twitter @ArcticSurvey.
During his trip, Martin will regularly send back film for developing, and images from the expedition will be posted regularly on his web site.
About Martin Hartley
Martin specialises in documenting the most inaccessible places on earth. He first gained public recognition at the age of 17 as runner-up in the Young Wildlife Photographer of The Year 1987 and has worked as a professional photographer ever since, winning numerous other awards including both portrait and adventure categories in the Travel Photographer of the Year. His sustained commitment to capture the beauty of unadulterated landscapes and remote communities has taken him to some of the most isolated and challenging locations in the world. His in-depth technical knowledge, creative vision and ability to produce results in the most difficult of conditions makes him a highly sought after expedition and adventure photographer. Martin has been nominated one of Time Magazine’s Heroes of the Environment for his work documenting the state of the North Polar sea ice cover with the Catlin Arctic Survey. His first book, Face to Face: Polar Portraits, in collaboration with the Scott Polar Research Institute, has just been published to accompany a touring exhibition. This will be the first opportunity for British and Irish rugby fans to confirm their place at rugby's premier tournament more than a year and a half before kick-off. 25,000 rugby supporters from the UK and Ireland are expected to head to New Zealand for the tournament.
The official travel packages are being promoted by one of the tournament’s Official Travel Agents (OTA’s), England Rugby Travel (http://www.englandrugbytravel.com). Prices start from £1849 per person for an ‘Explorer’ package which includes return flights to New Zealand and official match tickets to England’s last two pool matches. Full travel packages start from £4799 per person. Price includes return flights to New Zealand, transfers, all travel and internal flights, 12 nights accommodation (based on two sharing) and official match tickets to the four games over the opening two weekends including the All Blacks opening match and England’s first two pool games.

This is an important component to bring to life New Zealand’s ‘Stadium of Four Million’ concept as the country gets set to welcome the world to a nationwide ‘festival of rugby’ atmosphere.
Preparations to welcome what is estimated to be 85,000 fans from around the world are on schedule. Auckland’s Eden Park stadium is being upgraded to a capacity of 60,000 for the games and work will be completed by October 2010 and includes an all new south stand. Plans are also on track in Wellington for the city’s waterfront ‘Fan Zone’, a rugby village situated near the national Te Papa museum offering visitors a unique New Zealand cultural experience.
“Tourism New Zealand is working closely with our travel partners to ensure we give our rugby supporters a uniquely kiwi experience. The way in which the tournament is structured presents the perfect opportunity for fans to travel the length and breadth of New Zealand in between matches and really make the most of their visit,” commented Gregg Anderson, Regional Manager Europe, Tourism New Zealand. “Visitors from the UK and Ireland are expected to outnumber fans from all other nations competing at around 25,000 in total,” added Anderson.
The England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland teams’ pool games will be played in destinations including Dunedin, Christchurch, New Plymouth, Rotorua, Hamilton and Auckland. The quarter-finals will be played in Wellington and Christchurch and the semi-finals and finals in Auckland.
