GLASTONBURY ABBEY EXTRAVAGANZA 2010 -5 AUGUST 2010
Another year – another incredible Glastonbury Abbey Extravaganza
It would be difficult to top the success of the 2009 Glastonbury Abbey Music Extravaganza. The sell-out Status Quo concert and the return of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra provided two memorable evenings in the ancient parkland Abbey grounds.
But Michael Eavis has pulled off another masterstroke – 2010 has Madness at the Abbey!
The legendary British ska pioneers, Madness, with frontman Suggs, will have the Abbey jumping on Saturday 7th August. Originally from Camden Town, they formed in 1976 and were one of the most prominent bands of the late-1970s 2 tone/ska revival. Madness racked up over twenty consecutive Top 20 hits in the UK charts with numbers like ‘Our House’ and ‘Baggy Trousers’.
Opening the show on Saturday 7th will be 70’s legend Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel most famous for the iconic chart topper ‘Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)’ - one of the most played records in British broadcasting.
On Sunday 8th August, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra create a breathtaking family concert with a performance of popular classics full of popular pieces, culminating with a chance to wave flags to “Land of Hope and Glory”. Innovative violinist Nicola Benedetti returns for her third appearance at the Extravaganza, six years after her stunning victory as BBC Young Musician of the Years. We welcome back guest soloists tenor Andrew Rees and soprano Jo Appleby.
The Sunday concert will open with string quartet Raven – the resident quartet for the BBC 2 series, Maestro. Raven have performed and recorded with artists such as Gorillaz, Jools Holland, Leona Lewis and Gwen Stefani.
It goes without saying that fireworks and water fountain will add to what is always an exceptional production.
August 7th and 8th will be a weekend to pack your picnic and party!

NATIONAL TRUST - A ROOM WITH A VIEW
The National Trust has launched giant open-air living rooms at 12 National Trust sites - http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/grasssofa
The sofas and coffee tables took just over a month to grow and are now open to the public. They can be found all over the UK and offer some of the country's most spectacular views - a great reason to get the whole family out and about.
The open-air living rooms offer families the chance to experience the best views in Britain - from the majestic Osterley Park and House in Middlesex, the crashing waves below Wembury Point in Devon to the breathtaking scenery at Plas Newydd Country House and Gardens in Anglesey - from the familiar comfort of a sofa.
The living rooms - which took just over a month to grow - are made entirely out of natural materials and will last forever. They are a family-friendly compromise to entice sofa-loving Brits outdoors, following research that revealed the average family spends up to 43 hours a week sat on their sofa - even during the summer months.
Tony Berry, Visitor Experience Director of the National Trust, comments:
"Octavia Hill, founder of the National Trust, wanted to create 'open-air sitting rooms' for everyone to enjoy - so it seemed natural to bring this idea to life by creating real 'living' rooms for families to enjoy. The perfect way to stretch your legs and put your feet up!"
Open-air living rooms will be located at National Trust gardens, coastlines and scenic walks across the country from the 23rd July onwards. To find your nearest, visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/outdoorlivingroom.
The open-air living rooms are located at the following National Trust sites:
Plas Newydd Country House and Gardens, Anglesey . Little Moreton Hall, Cheshire . Osterley Park and House, Middlesex . Gibside, Gateshead . Sudbury Hall, Derbyshire . Packwood House, Warwickshire . Wimpole Hall, Hertfordshire . Uppark House and Garden, West Sussex . Kingston Lacy, Dorset (and Bournemouth town centre on the 24th and 25th July) . Lanhydrock, Cornwall . SILVER CROSS DAYS OUT
Win a family membership to National Trust and English Heritageby creating the ultimate guide to giving children a fun day out Silver Cross, the leading British pram and nursery goods manufacturer, has just launched a new website www.silvercrossdaysout.co.uk and is inviting all families with young children to visit it, comment on their experiences of days out and read other reviews.
The aim is to enable people to discover the very best venues, near to them, for a fun family day out. To help get the ball rolling, anyone posting a review will be entered into a prize draw to win five family memberships to both National Trust and English Heritage.
Silver Cross decided to build the Days Out website after several of their customers said that they were frustrated that recommendations on many existing websites were commercially motivated and often did not allow for reviews.
‘www.silvercrossdaysout.co.uk has been set up with reviews of 500 venues to get the site started,’ explains Alan Halsall, the Chairman of Silver Cross. ‘Silver Cross will not allow any advertising or sponsorship on the site as it has been built for the good of the community. It is up to everyone to take advantage of the reviews and also pass on their own experiences, good and bad, so others can benefit. In today’s difficult economic climate, Silver Cross wanted to help parents find new ideas for great ‘Days Out’ with the children – many of which are free. Please do get involved – the more everyone contributes, the better and more useful the site will become.’

BOOKING FOR WEEK 3 OPENS WEDS 28 JULY at 12noon
Due to unprecedented demand, the much-loved annual summer initiative, Kids Week in the West End, when children can go FREE to the best shows in town, has been extended to run for a whole three weeks for the first time ever!
With Kids Week 2010 enjoying record breaking sales of more than 40,000 tickets since booking opened on 13 July, many of London’s theatre producers have kindly offered more tickets for the final week of the summer holidays, so that families can now enjoy Kids Week from 13 August – 3 September.
Now in its 13th successful year, Kids Week, established by the Society of London Theatre, offers an action packed schedule of theatrical fun with an exhilarating range of free workshops, activities and events in addition to free tickets.
The ticket deal is simple - one child (aged between 5 and 16) will be able to go absolutely free to any participating show when accompanied by a full paying adult, and up to two more children can go half price.
Hundreds of children have been snapping up the chance to book for a variety of free activities and workshops designed to engage and inspire the next generation of theatre lovers and linked in with a variety of Kids Week shows including Burn the Floor, Hair, Blood Brothers and The 39 Steps. Children can peek backstage, learn to dance, sing with the cast and tread the boards, or enjoy exclusive post-show Q&As with the stars they have just seen on stage!
Tamzin Outhwaite, who is currently playing Sweet Charity at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, said:
“I know how you can fall in love with the excitement of theatre at an early age, I know because I did. Kids Week is the perfect summer treat and gives children an amazing opportunity to experience theatre up close, and is now three whole weeks dedicated to celebrating the best on offer – for absolutely nothing.”
Emma De Souza, Development Manager at the Society of London Theatre and the brains behind Kids Week, who last year won the Visit London People’s Choice London Hero Award, said: “We are thrilled that Kids Week is giving more children than ever before the chance to experience the magic of live theatre. As an extra bonus we are organising a special Family Fun day for 5-10 year olds at the Unicorn Theatre on 2 September. We will be announcing details shortly at www.kidsweek.co.uk.”
