REAL VENICE - A MAJOR PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION AT SOMERSET HOUSE
A major exhibition of photographic works of Venice by fourteen internationally renowned artists will be held at Somerset House from 11 October – 11 December 2011. The exhibition, Real Venice, comprises work by artists invited to Venice to create a portfolio of images, designed to raise substantial funds to save Venice and to create a lasting legacy of the city. Real Venice is mounted by the Venice in Peril Fund and curated by Elena Foster, founder of Ivorypress.

The artists are: Lynne Cohen, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Antonio Girbés, Nan Goldin, Pierre Gonnord, Dionisio Gonzalez, Candida Höfer, Tiina Itkonen, Mimmo Jodice, Tim Parchikov, Matthias Schaller, Jules Spinatsch, Robert Walker and Hiroshi Watanabe.

For centuries, Venice has inspired intellectuals, writers, and artists with its ravishing beauty, riches and strangeness. For the project, the artists were challenged to create a series of meaningful and original photographic images of Venice, perhaps the most photographed, but seriously threatened city in the world. The resulting images show Venice in all its beauty, but also in all its paradoxes and contrasts. As well as addressing the everyday life of the city’s inhabitants, its iconic monuments and modern architecture, the photographs capture the ravages wrought by mass tourism and the rise of the lagoon water level.

To coincide with the exhibition, select works from the Real Venice collection will be sold at auction in aid of Venice in Peril on 3 November 2011 at Phillips de Pury & Company, London. The remaining works, many of which will be on display at Somerset House, are available to purchase online at www.realvenice.org.

SEIZE THE DAY ADVENTURE BREAKS WITH THE FOUR SEASONS HOTEL, PERTHSHIRE THIS AUTUMN

The Four Seasons Hotel in St Fillans, Scotland has launched three exciting new action-packed adventure breaks for the autumn.

From a breathtaking flying experience, a thrilling quad bike ride or off road driving, to a gravity-assisted cycle trip there is an adventure break for everyone. With accommodation and meals at The Four Seasons Hotel included in each Seize The Day package, thrill-seekers are guaranteed a sumptuous dinner and heavenly sleep after an adrenaline-fuelled day.

Experience Scotland’s magnificent scenery and spectacular autumn colours by micro-light and Seize the Day in the Air. Fly up to 4000 feet at 60-100 mph to the west coast of Scotland, or from a mile-high, see the seas on both of Scotland’s coastlines at the same time. Local destinations can be requested and even take the controls – or simply sit back and enjoy the view. The instructors are highly experienced and fully qualified through CAA.

An alternative Seize the Day in the Air is an introduction to gliding through the Scottish Gliding Centre’s Mini Course. For complete beginners with no previous knowledge the gliding package covers as much flying time as can be fitted into the day. Enjoy the thrills of gliding and learn how to fly on the wind with these experienced gliders.

The two-day Seize the Day in the Air package includes two nights’ bed and breakfast at the Four Seasons Hotel and one night’s dinner in the award-winning fine dining restaurant overlooking Loch Earn, from £287 (micro light) and £332 (gliding) per person sharing.

Seize the Day Off Road provides a pulse-quickening hour on the ups and downs of a 40-acre off-road driving course. The site was originally a working quarry so drivers will be challenged by different obstacles including wading, descents, ascents, traversing and much more. The session is for an hour and includes working with a qualified instructor, so no experience is necessary, just a driving licence and a sense of adventure!

Or enjoy the excitement of quad biking at the nearby Crieff Activity Centre. Experienced instructors lead participants on an hour’s tour of the 900-acre estate, navigating woodland tracks and testing the wits of riders in the all-terrain off-road course.

Both Seize the Day Off Road packages include two nights’ bed and breakfast and one night’s dinner in the award-winning fine-dining restaurant overlooking Loch Earn, from £323 per person sharing, activities based on two people.

With Seize the Day in Gravity, it is all downhill in a 17-mile long gravity-assisted cycle trip, starting from 1737 feet above sea level at Lawers Dam in Aberfeldy, down 1300 feet to Fortingall. Using the single track tarmacadam road to Bridge of Balgie, cyclists pass through Glen Lyon (believed to be the most beautiful glen in Scotland) to Fortingall, home of the oldest tree in Europe. Seize the Day in Gravity includes two nights’ bed and breakfast and one night’s dinner in the award-winning fine dining restaurant from £299 per person sharing.

Seize the Day packages at the Four Seasons are ideal for special birthdays, a Christmas treat or simply to experience Scotland this autumn in an exciting new way. Offer is subject to availability.

SPICE MARKET LAUNCHES EXCLUSIVE MASTERCLASSES
Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s London restaurant, Spice Market, has introduced an exclusive monthly masterclass programme. Guests will now have the chance to learn the secrets behind some of the restaurants’ best and most successful dishes, under the tutelage of Executive Sous Chef Brett Crowe.

The first masterclass will take place on Saturday 24th September from 12pm – 3pm and will cost £80 per person. The sessions will start with an informal brunch before heading off into Chinatown to shop for ingredients with Chef Brett, Jean-Georges’ right-hand man. Guests will then head back to the restaurant where they will enjoy a cocktail before learning how to prepare signature dishes such as Salmon Tartar with Avocado, Spicy Radish and Ginger Marinade, Charred Sirloin with Soy, Garlic and Coriander and Thai Jewels and Fruits with Crushed Coconut Ice. Groups of no more than ten budding cooks enable Chef Brett to spread quality time with each guest, passing on unrivalled information and tricks of the trade.

Crowe skilfully transcribes Spice Market’s complex recipes into a format suitable for home cooking, without losing the flavour, style or wow-factor. Wine matching the dishes will be served as the guests taste the fruits of their labour before heading home with a Spice Market gift bag.

Brett Crowe, 30, trained at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, before working at fine dining French restaurant Everest in Chicago for two and a half years. Travelling across America, Brett worked under Head Chef Michael Mina at French-Asian restaurant Aqua in San Francisco and in Ohio at German restaurant Mecklenburg Gardens before moving to New York. Brett has worked for Jean-Georges Vongerichten for four years, starting at the three Michelin star restaurant Jean Georges in Trump Towers Manhattan.

Brett’s recognisable talent enabled him to move quickly to senior positions, before heading to London. Brett specialises in cooking Asian-inspired cuisine using French techniques that he has perfected over the years.

The masterclass is the ultimate South East Asian-inspired cooking experience, taking guests on a culinary journey based on ideas from one of the worlds greatest chefs. The cuisine at Spice Market is Jean-Georges’ interpretation of the street food experienced during his many trips across South East Asia and this can be seen across all of his menus at the restaurant. Guests can enjoy a variety of fusion dishes presented across different menus, offering something for every taste.

CABANA BRASILIAN BARBECUE TO LAUNCH THIS AUTUMN

Seasoned restaurateurs Jamie Barber (Hush, Kitchen Italia, Villandry and Sake No Hana) and David Ponté (Momo, Mocoto) have teamed up to launch CABANA: a relaxed, vibrant and affordable new Brasilian barbecue restaurant that will open both at Westfield Stratford City and Central St Giles, the colourful new London development designed by Renzo Piano. Both will open in November.

Ponté, who was born in Rio, has channelled his knowledge and love of Brasilian cuisine and culture into this latest venture which takes its cue from the traditional Brasilian churrascarias and local snacks found on most Brasilian street corners from Sao Paolo to Salvador. These dishes, which can be eaten as a starter or throughout the meal, include the popular Brasilian cheese dough balls known as Pao de Queijo as well as Palm Heart Pastels and Chicken Coxinhas. ‘Cabanistas’ will circulate the room with colour coded barbecue skewers offering choices of meat such as Malagueta marinated chicken thighs, Baby Back Sticky Ribs and Chimichurri Butterflied Rump Steak, as well as a number of vegetarian options including Giant Portobello Mushrooms with Halloumi Cheese. Menus will be stamped according to which skewers have been enjoyed and customers will be able to flip a disc from green to red to indicate when they are finished or simply taking a break.

CABANA will also house its own frozen yoghurt bar. Frozen yoghurt stalls are as common on Brasilian city streets as coffee shops are in the UK and CABANA’s refreshing frozen yoghurt - in flavours ranging from Peanut & Cashew to Dulce de Leite and the fruit of the month - will be available throughout the day both to eat in and take away.

CABANA will also offer an extensive list of Brasilian and Portuguese beers including Sagres on tap. Trays of ? pint glasses will circulate the room, with the beer characteristically cold at -2 ° following the tradition in Brasil. The central bar will also have a selection of Brasilian favourites such as the national drink of choice, Caipirinha, in several flavours.

It’s not just the food that has taken inspiration from Brasil, designer Alex Michaelis has ensured that the Brasilian spirit runs throughout the two restaurants with an aged and hand-made feel. With two sites opening almost simultaneously, CABANA plans to embrace the Brasilian vibe, with banquettes created from recycled jeans from Sao Paolo favelas, walls lined with Brasilian printed posters and scaffold plank wood flooring. Both sites are similar in size with large, open terraces all year and indoor seating for roughly 80 people. CABANA will not take bookings on tables less than 6 people.
