David Davies and Jodie KiddSWIM WITH THE HELP OF DAVID DAVIES
The British Gas Great Swim Series 2010 officially launched last week, with Jodie Kidd and David Davies launching the series of five open water swimming events, kicking off this year in Suffolk on 19th June and ending in Salford on 26th September.

Started in 2008, the British Gas Great Swim Series has grown to become the largest open water swimming event in the UK. The series of events attracts people from all walks of life from athletes, Olympic medallists and high profile celebrities, to OAPs and people with inspirational stories – some of whom are struggling with disabilities and illnesses – of all ages, swimming abilities and backgrounds.

Jodie Kidd will be attempting the one mile open water challenge on 19th June in Suffolk.

Jodie comments: “I’m delighted to be launching this year’s British Gas Great Swim Series with David. Swimming has always been one of my favourite sports and due to a recent injury; it’s become my preferred form of exercise and the only sport I can practice without restrictions. I’m very excited and hope my competitive streak will rise to the challenge. I aim to complete the swim as part of a fundraising cause for both Save a London Child and the Jodie Kidd Foundation.”

25 year old Welsh open water swimmer and Olympic silver medallist David Davies will be competing at two of the British Gas Great Swims – the first one on the 19th June in Suffolk and the second on 3rd July, in London.

David comments: “Launching the British Gas Great Swim Series is an honour as I love the thrill and adrenaline you get from open water swimming – there’s nothing quite like it. I look forward to giving Jodie some training techniques in the run up to the 19th June, which should be great fun. Personally, I’m hoping to achieve winning times in both events and can guarantee I’ll be giving it my all.”

The British Gas Great Swim series attracted 10,000 participants in 2009 and it is expected that the number of entrants will double this year. Many take part for the challenge, to get fit or to raise money for charity.

To find out more about the series, which features a new swim in Salford Quays, a 500m open water swim and a two mile swim, go to: www.greatswim.org.

KATE HUMBLE URGES TRAVELLING BRITS ‘STUFF YOUR RUCKSACK’ WITH HER NEW RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL WEBSITE
Broadcaster and travel writer Kate Humble has launched a website called http://www.stuffyourrucksack.com/.

Stuffyourrucksack.com acts as a message board between travellers and small charities and organisations that need things a traveller could easily bring with them on their holiday.

Anyone travelling that comes across a small school, for example, that needs books or toys, can put the details on the website to alert other travellers who may be planning a trip to the same place and could bring those things with them.

Kate said, “I started the site out of frustration as I have travelled to many developing countries and come across so many small projects that needed things I could have easily brought with me, had I been able to find out in advance. This is what Stuff Your Rucksack does; let’s travellers know before they leave home what’s needed where they are going. Our logo says ‘Pack a Bag, Change a Life’. It really does! And the traveller gets a unique experience that can’t be bought or found in a guidebook.”

How do charities or organisations register their needs on the site? Some have found out about it and registered themselves but most of the over one hundred projects on the site at the moment have been registered by travellers who have seen the projects for themselves and want to help.

The new-look site has been designed by Think Publishing and the team there will continue to host and run the site. Easy to navigate, it is extremely user-friendly, and encourages travellers to post their photographs and videos and share stories of their Stuff Your Rucksack experiences. This exciting new phase has been made possible by the invaluable and generous support of Aigle, the French outdoor lifestyle clothing and footwear brand that has existed since 1853.

The Stuff Your Rucksack Foundation was set up by Kate four years ago. With more than 180 charities/not for profit organisations now registered on the site Kate felt it was time to officially launch the site and broaden its appeal and urge anyone travelling abroad this year to log-on to the site and find out what they can pack to change someone’s life.

Said Kate; “I would love people to make Stuff Your Rucksack part of their essential holiday checklist. Passport? Money? Visa? Stuff Your Rucksack?”

TV Historian and traveller Dan Snow, said "Like so many other online movements that are changing the world bit by bit stuffyourrucksack.com is brilliantly simple and strikingly effective. No NGOs, governments, charities or middlemen; just you and someone who could use your help. I'll never going abroad again without checking it first."

Journalist and intrepid presenter of ‘Equator’ and Capricorn’ Simon Reeve said http://Stuffyourrucksack.com is a fantastic idea for travellers who really care about the places they're visiting and the people they meet. Don't just take a few sweets to give away, take something useful! Not only will your gift directly benefit people in the community you're visiting, but it will give a real sense of purpose and focus to your journey. And that's something that money just can't buy”.

The Stuff Your Rucksack Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that is limited by guarantee and registered in Guernsey.

VIRGIN MEDIA POLL REVEALS TWO THIRDS OF 18-30S FEEL UNDER ESTIMATED IN BUSINESS
Ambitious yet under-valued; a nation of budding entrepreneurs
Virgin Media poll reveals two thirds of 18-30s feel under estimated in business

Young people in Britain are feeling hugely under-valued in their place of work or education a new survey has revealed. The poll for Virgin Media Pioneers, a new online community which gives young entrepreneurs access to some of the UK’s best business brains, showed that two thirds (67%) of 18-30 year olds in Britain feel that they are not realising their true potential and that their current skills and qualifications could, and should, be put to much better use.

For a quarter (24%) of young people, the dream career is running their own business and, perhaps surprisingly to some, just two per cent dream of becoming famous. A further 17 per cent admitted they would rather have a more altruistic career working in public sector jobs such as teaching, nursing, or working for a charity.

Despite over half (56%) of those questioned having a degree or Higher National Diploma equivalent 23 per cent want to gain more qualifications in order to better tailor their skills to the career they really want.

With over a third (39%) of those asked feeling unhappy with their current work or educational situation, it is clear that today’s 18–30 year olds simply aren’t getting the resource and support they need to realise their ambitions and use their talents to their best potential.

Neil Berkett, chief executive officer at Virgin Media, said: “The digital world can open up many new opportunities and experiences for people from all types of backgrounds and, through Virgin Media Pioneers, we are helping young people fulfill their potential. Many of the young people we spoke to want to become entrepreneurs but everyone we spoke to wanted to feel their skills are truly valued and harnessed in much more productive ways.”

Virgin Media recognises the potential of young people in the UK. Virgin Media Pioneers, in partnership with Enterprise UK, brings together young entrepreneurs and leading business mentors, including David McQueen, Tre Azam and Bonnie Brulee onto a new online community: www.virginmediapioneers.com. Through Virgin Media Pioneers, young entrepreneurs can connect, share their experiences, struggles and ideas via video blogs and access expert comment, tips and advice. For more information log onto www.virginmediapioneers.com

TURN YOUR TOASTIE INTO A COASTIE WITH COASTAL CHEDDAR
If you’re stomach is already rumbling at the thought, then read on.Ford Farm, a Dorset cheese maker with a cheese house situated on the rolling Dorset downs and overlooking the Jurassic Coast has invented the ultimate cheddar for a cheese toastie.
Coastal Cheddar is matured for up to fifteen months in order for it to take on optimum flavour. It has a distinctly rugged flavour, reflective of the wild, windswept coastline that is the World Heritage Jurassic Coast. But despite its complex, maturity, Coastal is also infused with unmistakeably sweet overtones, a direct result of the milk which is sourced only from herds grazing on the lush, sweet pastures surrounding Britain’s coast. And finally, look out for clearly identifiable ‘Coastal Crunch ‘a unique feature of this Cheddar which is a result of calcium crystals that form during the long maturing process. Tempted to create your own ‘Coastie’ with Coastal Cheddar? If so, you can now buy Coastal at selected supermarkets including Tesco and from the new on-line shop at www.fordfarm.com. Coastal is priced at £7.00 per kilo.

Hot Brands Verdict
Being based in Dorset, we can vouch for the beauty of the coastline where this cheese is created, but more than that this cheese really is delicious. It has a really special taste, it is sweet, and at the same time mature. We loved it! Highly recommended!

Flora TVFLORA JOINS FORCES WITH JEAN-CHRISTOPHE NOVELLI AND MATT TEBBUTT TO LAUNCH A CAMPAIGN TO HELP FAMILIES LOWER THEIR ‘HEART AGE’

Flora is on a mission. To help 11 million people in the UK and Ireland take their ‘Heart Age’* test by 2020, with two celebrity chef favourites on board to spread the word. But ask someone their ‘Heart Age’ and most people will stare at you blankly.

However, ‘Heart Age’ is an age that really counts. It is an estimation of the ‘age’ of your heart and should match, or preferably be lower than, your birth age. Flora believes knowing your ‘Heart Age’ is the first step to helping you do the right thing for your heart.

Do you know your Heart Age?
To help families find out the age of their hearts, and make diet and lifestyle changes, Flora has launched a special Heart Age Calculator at www.floraheartage.com**

The innovative online tool enables you to find out your Heart Age, by answering simple questions about your health and lifestyle, and gives you a free heart-health plan. The easy-to-follow twelve-week diet and lifestyle plan is tailored to your specific needs, and suggests changes you can make so you can have a better chance of living healthier for longer.

Flora Brand Manager, Kate Mitchell, explains; “Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Europe, and ageing healthily depends on looking after your heart, but our research shows many people neglect the health of their heart.

“We’ve developed the ‘Heart Age Calculator’ to remind and encourage people to find out what shape their heart is in. The best thing about this campaign is that you can easily help lower your ‘Heart Age’ by making small lifestyle changes, so we’re on a mission to get as many people as possible to take the test!”

One change that can be made simply is to substitute butter for Flora in recipes, amount for amount. Switching from butter to Flora can reduce your saturated fat intake by over 3kg a year***, helping to keep your heart healthy, whilst still ensuring recipes taste great. This is the amount of saturated fat you would find in approximately 862 doughnuts!

Celebrity chefs to the rescue

It has been suggested that about 80% of heart disease and strokes could be prevented by positive lifestyle changes, such as eating a healthy diet, exercise and abstinence from smoking (World Health Organisation, 2003).

Flora understands it’s not always easy to eat healthily so they have teamed up with celebrity chefs, Jean-Christophe Novelli and Matt Tebbutt, to give families a helping hand.

The culinary heroes have devised a range of hassle-free recipes to make family favourites healthier, from shepherd’s pie to beef burgers. The delicious recipes are lower in saturated fat than standard versions, and can be downloaded free from www.floraheartage.com

*
‘Heart Age’ is based on a well-established tool called Framingham risk score which provides a validated way of determining a person’s risk of developing cardiovascular disease over the next ten years. Heart Age is calculated using information about factors that are influencing people’s heart health such as age, gender, blood pressure, total and HDL (good) cholesterol, smoking and diabetic status.

**The Flora ‘Heart Age Calculator’ does not provide diagnostic information, does not evaluate an individual’s medical condition and does not provide medical advice. Always consult your Doctor for medical information and advice.

***Based on the switch from 20g of butter a day to 20g of Flora Original or Flora Light a day.

RECORD NUMBER OF PEOPLE GIVE SNAILS AN ESCAR-GOT

Once deemed a forkful too far for most Brits – snails are back in demand according to Café Rouge. A record number are expected to be devoured this month alone as the nation celebrates National Escargot Day on 24 May.

Since Brits tuned into Heston Blumenthal serving up sizzling tempura snails on skewers in his televised Gothic Feast, Cafe Rouge has witnessed a sharp rise in snail sceptics wanting to try the slippery little critters for themselves – and now they can.

To meet customer demand, Cafe Rouge has shipped in a record 50,000 snails from Burgundy for its limited edition National Escargot Day menu. Available until 30 May, diners can experience the prize Helix Pomatia in a variety of ways – covered in rich garlic butter, diced with tomato and chilli, smothered in melted reblochon or topped with tender ham.

In a bid to transform the nations taste buds, Café Rouge will be giving away a free escargot dish with every main meal purchased from 17-25 May. In fact, restaurant chefs are so convinced this gastro-delight will remain a popular choice among the British public, its signature Classic Escargot dish will become a permanent fixture on the menu all year round.

Café Rouge’s resident snail expert, Caroline Réveillon, explains why Brits like what they find.

“Anyone who enjoys eating mussels, clams or lobster should try snails as the texture is very similar. They are really delicious and also very good for you. Most people don’t realise they are low in fat and rich in protein, magnesium and vitamin C.”

Take advantage of the free snail offer or to find your nearest restaurant, visit http://www.caferouge.co.uk. The National Escargot Day menu starts from £4.95 while stocks last.

ENJOY AN ENGLISH SUMMER - TAKE A FAMILY TRIP TO WITLEY COURT -

Swap a sun lounger for a site seeing adventure and English tradition with a historic holiday to Pool House at Witley Court, Worcestershire; a bolthole for family fun and outdoor escapades this summer. What’s more, there’s 10 per cent off a stay when booked before May 31st.[1] <outbind://329/#_ftn1>

Built in the seventeenth century, Witley Court was once one of the great houses in the Midlands. Following a devastating fire in the 1930’s, it remains one of England’s most stunning ruins, with glorious gardens.

Pool House, Witley Court’s accompanying holiday cottage, is the largest of English Heritage’s portfolio of 15 holiday cottages, sleeping up to eight guests, plus a cot - perfect for larger families or groups of friends. The cottage boasts four spacious double bedrooms, two of which have en-suite bathrooms and two of which are twins.

From the upstairs windows, take in the magnificent views of the rolling countryside, over the lake, to the gilded dome of the Georgian parish church of St. Michael and All Angels and across Witley Court’s glorious gardens. The garden’s main features include the breathtaking stone fountains, the largest of which depicts Perseus and Andromeda, can also be seen from Pool House at certain times of year.

On the ground floor relax in the spacious sitting room, realise dreams of becoming a master chef in the large kitchen and dining room, while the kids tell Witley Court’s ghostly tales in the second sitting room or play in the sheltered, private garden.

Wake each morning inspired by the views, take breakfast on the French-styled, covered terrace and spend the days discovering history on the doorstep, before enjoying a private stroll through the rolling gardens, thanks to the ‘out of hours’ access.

To make stays even more memorable, visitors can relive the glory days of old, with a selection of great events at Witley Court this summer. Marvel at plays by Oscar Wilde and William Shakespeare. Or discover what really happened behind with scenes with a tour of the court and gardens – areas rarely open to the public.

Pool House has been refurbished to a modern and contemporary standard, with all the essentials to make any stay perfect. As with all 15 of English Heritage cottages, a generous food hamper and bottle of wine are provided on arrival and where possible goods are locally sourced. Pool House is available for rent for long weekends (3 nights, Friday - Monday), mid-week breaks (4 nights, Monday – Friday) and a full week (7 nights).

INTRODUCING DKNY WOMEN’S SUMMER EAU DE TOILETTE LIMITED-EDITION SUMMER ART SERIES FOR 2010

There’s something wonderfully inspiring about summer. Especially in New York City, where art and romance infuse the air. Days are longer, giving you more time to enjoy a cool night exploring the city’s hot cultural scene. After work, you slip on a sexy little dress and high heels; take in an art exhibit in Chelsea, grab tickets to Shakespeare in The Park or pack a picnic and bring it to “movie night” in Bryant Park. The DKNY Summer Art Series embraces all of the creative sides New York has to offer, with this new light-hearted fragrance. DKNY Women’s Summer Eau de Toilette is quintessentially New York in spirit and attitude.

DKNY Women’s Summer Eau de Toilette is an iridescent floral that evokes the lush femininity of sun-kissed magnolia petals. The top note introduces a splashy summer cocktail of tangerine juice, pink guava nectar, mango flowers and freesia. Its floral soul blends a summer bouquet of frangipani, dewy muguet, jasmine mist and beachy orange flower petals. It unwinds into a sheer cloud of sandalwood, cedarwood and a veil of white woods. The effect is soft, sensual and summery.

This scent is part of DKNY’s Summer Art Series, where the iconic skyscraper is creatively reinterpreted in a limited edition. The bottle is clear with deco stripe and dots and pink to match the pink-tinted juice. The bottle, like the scent, captures the colourful, cultural spirit of summer -- a season full of happy, joyful times that promise to live on forever in your memory.

Founded in 1989, DKNY was created by Donna Karan to be the street side of her luxe Collection. At DKNY, the clothes are friendly, the fashion fast and the attitude sharp. DKNY summer celebrates the many romantic possibilities inspired by the art and soul of New York City.

DKNY Women’s Summer Eau de Toilette RRP £30 / €44

GLORIOUS GOODWOOD SHOWCASES THE BEST OF BRITISH STYLE WITH NUTTERS’ DAVID MASON & MILLINER COZMO JENKS
The unveiling of the first ever bespoke luxury fashion range for Goodwood race course, The Goodwood Racing Colours Collection™. took place recently. The collection is set to launch 11 June to celebrate Glorious Goodwood - the quintessential summer race event taking place on 27 to 31 July.

Designed with both men and women in mind, there will be a number of offerings for savvy race spectators and fashionistas alike, for the highlight of the summer racing season. These will include carefully crafted Panamas from renowned milliner Cozmo Jenks to bespoke waistcoats adorned with unique prints tailored by David Mason from Nutters of Savile Row

Well known to be the home of the Panama, Pimms and parasols, Glorious Goodwood has always had its own distinctive style. To celebrate the start of the horse racing season, Cozmo Jenks’s range of men’s and women’s Panamas, handwoven from the fibres of the paja toquilla plant in Ecuador, will be splashed with signature Goodwood racing colours to create striking headwear for the summer. Fans of Cozmo’s work already include Kylie Minogue, Leah Wood, Jodie Kidd and members of the Royal family.

Cozmo holds a distinctive yet traditional style demonstrated through dramatic shapes, fibres and materials creating spectacular and flamboyant one-off pieces. She said of her partnership with Goodwood, “Goodwood is the home of the Panama. I was delighted to be approached to bring my creative style to an exclusive range for the Glorious Goodwood festival. To me the horse races are a hallmark where British chic is showcased at its best”.

Alongside the Panama hats will launch a unique line of men’s and women’s bespoke waistcoats designed by David Mason. The distinguished Nutters’ waistcoats will be available in a number of materials from linen to doeskin and an infinite variety of bespoke prints. Following comprehensive studies in digital fashion science, Mason will adopt groundbreaking technologies in order to create one-off bespoke prints and custom-made tailoring of the highest level for Goodwood race-goers.

Nutters has a colourful history - led by founder Tommy Nutter - who attracted fans from Elton John to the Beatles and Bianca Jagger to his distinctive tailoring. Mason said of his designs, “to be able to bring the waistcoat back to its roots at Glorious Goodwood is very exciting. This waistcoat will signify old-school thought and new school vision in fashion to create something entirely unique. Nutters is thrilled to be on board”.

In a place of such esteemed heritage, it is fitting that the waistcoat forms part of the Goodwood style range. Historically it can be traced back to the reign of Charles II, father to the first Duke of Richmond, who adopted the use of the waistcoat in his courts. Lord March added, “We are thrilled to be making innovations in the style and fashion arena this year. To us, the finely tuned collaborations with Cozmo Jenks and David Mason form the perfect partnership of style and heritage which are fitting with Glorious Goodwood”.

The Goodwood Racing Colours™ Collection will be available on 11th June nationwide at www.goodwood.com or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. SO EASY, SO PASSIONATE, SOFFRITTO The taste of Italy from BERTOLLI
Rooted in the pleasures and principles of Tuscan cuisine, BERTOLLI draws on over 150 years of culinary expertise to create a range of authentic Italian, perfectly prepared sauces. Inspired by traditional recipes from the trattorias across Italy, the NEW range now uses the time-honoured soffritto tradition to create our tastiest ever pasta sauces.

Here’s the Italian know-how: Soffritto means ‘under-fried’ and is the basis for all good, homemade Italian sauces. Chopped onions are caramelised in the finest olive oil as slowly as possible to create a flavourful base. The longer the onions are cooked, the richer the flavour. Once the ‘soffritto’ is ready, fresh ingredients including the all-important, naturally sweet Solerrosso tomatoes are added, along with vegetables, herbs and spices, depending on the recipe. Unlike other sauces that don’t use this technique, BERTOLLI offers flavours that are consistently bold, rich and authentically Italian, with a rugged texture to get the taste buds begging for more.

Italians believe great food makes life worth living and the chefs at Bertolli agree. Passionate about perfection, they embarked on a gastronomic tour of Italy, visiting traditional trattorias up and down the country to search out the most inspiring regional recipes for their sauces. By using traditional soffritto recipes, and combining the finest ingredients, Bertolli offers you the very best flavours of Italy, without you having to make the effort. It takes over 150 years of culinary experience to make an Italian sauce taste this good and no one has time for that!
Easy to use and totally delicious, the BERTOLLI soffritto based sauces add a dash of magic to a wide variety of dishes, offering an exciting taste of Italy every day of the week. Use straight from the jar for quick and easy pasta, or add to mince for a traditional bolognese sauce. Spread over lightly toasted ciabatta to create authentic tasting Italian bruschetta.

Bertolli has introduced two NEW additions to the pasta sauce range: a classic Italian BOLOGNESE and a NAPOLETANA rich in Solerrosso tomatoes. The versatile range also includes Siciliana (with sun-dried tomatoes and oregano), Basilico (with aromatic basil), Arrabbiata (with the added punch of red chillies and peppers), Primavera (with crunchy courgettes and peppers), and Pecorino (with Pecorino Romano cheese).

So take the time to enjoy a meal the Italian way: invite the whole family round, open a bottle of Chianti and enjoy classic Italian flavours from BERTOLLI, with every bite.

The new range of sauces is available from all major supermarkets priced £1.89 for a 400g jar (more than enough to feed four hungry people). Visit www.bertolli.co.uk for further information.

BERTOLLI – it’s the closest to traditional Italian homemade pasta sauce you can get. Buon Appetito!

BRITISH MILITARY FITNESS INSTRUCTORS RACE THE ENDUROMAN ARCH TO ARC IN AID OF HELP FOR HEROES
Six British Military Fitness (BMF) instructors will take part in the arduous Enduroman Arch to Arc this June to raise money for Help for Heroes and at the same time hopefully strip the current World record holders of their title.

Carlos Glencairn-Campbell (41yrs), Nigel Ilsley (36yrs), Matt Walker (29yrs), Jeremy Nelson (46yrs), Paul Kenny (34yrs) and Andy Bosman (27yrs), all BMF instructors will run from Marble Arch to Dover, swim to Calais and then cycle to the Arc de Triomphe, over 300 miles in total. If that wasn’t enough they will also be trying to beat the time of 63 hours and 26 minutes set by a team from British Gas in June 2009.

Team captain and instigator, Carlos Glencairn-Campbell thinks the world record title is in reach: “Yes there is no doubt this event will be a challenge to us all, but between us we have hours of experience in similar races and we will encourage each other throughout the different stages. Raising money for Help for Heroes is such an important part of this challenge as four of us are still serving in the Territorial Army (TA) with three of us completing tours of Iraq in 2003/2004. We have recently decided to dedicate this race to our good friend and fellow BMF instructor Tom Keogh who recently died serving his country in Afghanistan.”

The team not only spend their time during the week getting the public in shape through their BMF sessions in local parks, they also find the time to take part in events such as the Marathon des Sables (Carlos), the Jungle marathon in Brazil (Jeremy) and Trailwalker UK 2009 (Nigel).

Major Robin Cope (Ret’d), Managing Director at BMF, supports them throughout their challenge: “Throughout anyone’s Army career the skill of teamwork is learnt and events like this really put this to the test. I have no doubt that these six guys, through pure determination, will complete the event in record time and as a result raise a substantial amount of money for such a worth cause.”
