THE ULTIMATE WORKOUT: GET YOURSELF FIT WHILST SHOPPING
CANCER RESEARCH UK LAUNCHES ‘SHOPPERCISE’ FITNESS TREND FOR RACE FOR LIFE SERIES
It’s rare that many women need a reason to go shopping but now there is the perfect excuse, with a new exercise programme that enables shoppers to get fit at the same time. ‘Shop for Life’, which combines hitting the shops with some gentle training, has been introduced by Cancer Research UK, ahead of the charity’s Race for Life series this summer.
Fitness expert feedback suggests that women often cover several kilometres during a typical walk round a shopping centre. ‘Shop for Life’ offers a simple yet effective way to incorporate light exercise into a busy lifestyle. To get ‘shoppercising’ immediately, women everywhere can print out ‘Shop for Life’ route maps which have been developed for nine of the UK’s leading shopping centres from the Race for Life website at www.raceforlife.org/ifICanDoit. All women then have to do is head to their local shopping centre and marvel at how easily they complete a 2k distance, without ever putting down their shopping bags – the perfect training for a Race for Life event!
The ‘Shop for Life’ maps provide shoppers with a training route via all of their favourite stores within their local centre, a stop at the food court for a snack, a few visits to the fitting room, and a quick trip round again to pick up those forgotten items. Southampton’s West Quay, Manchester’s Trafford Centre and Glasgow’s Buchanan Galleries are just three of the shopping centres where the initiative is currently operating.
Now in its 16th series, Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life is the UK’s largest women-only fundraising event. Women are invited to walk, jog or run 5k at over 230 Race for Life events taking place across the UK from May - July. The charity is hoping that 680,000 women will come together and help raise over £60 million to fund the charity’s life saving work into all forms of cancer.
Fitness trainer to the stars Lucy Wyndham-Read is fully behind the ‘Shop for Life’ initiative and comments; “The ‘shoppercise’ routes are an easy way to give your whole body a workout whilst doing something you love! Meandering through a typical shopping session not only offers the opportunity to tone the lower legs and thighs – particularly when climbing the stairs - but carrying all those heavy bags is a great way to tone the upper arms! Shop for Life’ is a fantastic idea that can not only improve your fitness and burn calories, but will also help to breakdown the misconception of how far a few kilometres really is.”
Natasha Dickinson, Head of Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life said; “We know that without even realising it, many women probably cover several kilometres on an average weekend shopping trip. ‘Shop for Life’ is a great way to help women prepare for Race for Life with a gentle ‘shoppercise’ training routine.”
“We hope that women everywhere will download the map and combine their shopping trips with their Race for Life training. Our campaign is designed to give women across the UK all the advice and encouragement they need to see 5k as an achievable distance. Hopefully this will encourage them to enter their local event to help to raise as much money as possible to beat cancer.”
‘Shop for Life’ is part of the ‘If I can do it…’ campaign which aims to inspire women everywhere to take part in Race for Life whatever their age, shape, size or fitness level. The charity has set up the website portal that features hints and tips to prepare for a Race for Life from a number of celebrity ambassadors, including advice from ‘Green Goddess’ and keep fit TV presenter Diana Moran, and a regular training blog from American Comedienne Amy Lamé. For more information on the ‘If I Can Do It…’ campaign, go to www.raceforlife.org/ifICanDoit.

DUNLOP REVEALS MINI OWNERS’ SECRETS
The Mini celebrates its 50th birthday this year and organisers of the Dunlop Great & British Motorsport Festival want to find out more about mini owners and their cars. The first of the season’s celebrations takes place at Rockingham race track in Northamptonshire as part of the festival and is expected to attract hundreds of Minis and their drivers.
Dunlop Motorsport’s Communications Manager James Bailey said; “Over the past 50 years Minis have become part of the nation’s heritage and part of many families. Every Mini, old or new seems to have its own character, which is why we believe that many of the cars have been given names by their owners. Dunlop has been involved with Mini since our engineers developed its very first tyre for a ten inch wheel back in the 1950s. We’re still working with Mini today, producing some very hi-tech road tyres, as well as the tyres that many Minis race on.”
Bailey, who has admitted to naming his own cars over the years added; “With so many Minis, there must be thousands that have been given names and we want to know, just through curiosity what people have called theirs. We’d also like to know about any Mini stories they might have. Imagine if your Mini could talk, what tales could it tell?”
“When we were planning the Dunlop Great & British Motorsport Festival Event at Rockingham, everyone we spoke to seemed to have a Mini story to tell, so we’ve opened up the forum at www.driversknow.co.uk for Mini lovers to share tales of their cars.”
Jayne Ward from Staffordshire was one of the first to tell all on Dunlop’s ‘driversknow’ website. She said; “An ex-boyfriend used to race Minis back in the 1980s, and that got me into the excitement of motor racing and prompted me to buy the first of 4 different minis. The last one, Goxy, named that because of its registration number was the most special. We had loads of adventures and it was the car I taught my fiancée, now husband to drive in. I have great memories of that car and I’m disappointed that I don’t still have a Mini to be able to join in some of the great 50th anniversary celebrations that are planned.”
The first Dunlop Great & British Motorsport Festival of the season is at Rockingham racetrack in Northamptonshire over the weekend of 18th & 19th April and Mini owners are being encouraged to turn up in their Minis and to take part in what is hoped will be a parade of the most Minis driving in a procession.
