The Ailsa Bar & Lounge is the ideal location for pre-dinner cocktails and light canapés as the sun goes down over the Ailsa Craig while Turnberry’s Grand Tea Lounge, created in collaboration with Twinings, revives the atmosphere of the original Edwardian tea lounge at the hotel. BEST OF BRITISH’ GUIDE TO GREAT DAYS OUT THIS SUMMER
Avis helps keep 13.1million* kids entertained this summer holiday
Avis Rent A Car has scoured the UK as part of its Best of British (BOB) campaign to bring you its guide to great days out, helping to keep the children entertained during the long school summer holidays.
With temperatures set to soar this summer, put down those Wii remotes and pack some suncream - Avis has some great deals on car rental with selected locations offering cars from just £15 a day to help you get out and about.
From rock-pooling in Dorset to daring the dungeons in Edinburgh, there’s something for every family, easy to reach by car and to suit all budgets:
Best for outdoor adventure
For a family fit for adventure, head to Dorset’s Moors Valley Country Park and explore its tree-lined trails on foot or by bicycle. Or for those wanting more of a challenge, why not sign up for a tree-top adventure? Get yourself harnessed and prepare for rope bridges, Tarzan swings, scramble nets and ladders - the Go Ape challenge will really put you through your paces.
Best for battle-troopers
Bring battleships to life by heading down to The Historic Dockyard, Chatham, Kent. Explore three warships – the Victorian sloop Gannet, World War-II destroyer Cavalier and the Cold-War submarine, Ocelot, before discovering The Royal National Lifeboat Institute’s historic collection of 17 lifesaving vessels.
Best for rock-pooling
Best for rook-pooling, Devon’s Shoalstone beach is a family favourite. This shingle rock beach is a minefield of rock-pools, home to secretive sea creatures seeking sanctuary until the next tide. During the summer months, it is manned by lifeguards, so swimming in the 25 metre sea water swimming pool is safe with care.
Best for car buffs
If you have a budding Jeremy Clarkson in the family then you should head down to Beaulieu in Hampshire for the day. Its world-famous National Motor Museum showcases over 250 vehicles taking you through the motoring ages. Between the James Bond experience, veteran bus ride and go-karting there’s something for the whole family to enjoy!
Best for re-living fairytales
The Beatrix Potter Trail set within the idyllic Lake District is truly breathtaking. Explore the scenes where our childhood favourites Peter Rabbit and Squirrel Nutkins’ tales unravelled. Between the lakes and the trees, prepare yourself for a trip full of adventure and fresh air.
Best for getting ahead at school
It may sound like homework, but a trip to Hampton Court Palace will not only help you get to the top of your class but you’ll be in danger of having one of the best days of your holidays too! Try to memorise all of Henry’s wives whilst attempting to conquer the maze created in 1702! Don’t miss the vast Tudor kitchens; here 800 meals were produced twice a day.
Best for cycling
The Lizard Peninsula, South Cornwall, is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Here, the cycling enthusiast will be spoilt for choice. The famous Penzance to Lizard Point path is a popular trail and at 34 miles it has a difficulty rating of 6/10. The stunning views, stretching as far as the eye can see, will help spur you on!
Best for underground adventure
Aladdin’s cave, eat your heart out! Venture down into the caverns that surround the enchanting village of Castleton. Some say this Peak District village should have been called ‘Caveton’, and its easy to see why; you enter the cave via an old lead mine and then by boat, as the entrance is partially flooded. Once inside you can enjoy the walks round the stalactites, stalagmites and the ‘Bottomless Pit’ shaft!
Best for horror stories
The Edinburgh Dungeon and the Real Mary King’s Close, seemingly haunted with witches, grave robbers and executioners, are guaranteed to get your imagination running wild! Prepare for a day of shocking surprises, ear piercing screams and flashing lights. This is not for the faint-hearted and it is advised that families stick together!
Keep the peace - rent a bigger car, so you can let them bring a friend and their parents too! Going to the seaside needn’t be a squeeze, rent an estate and have room for the kids and the sun loungers.

Many of the events will be hosted by colourful historic characters who remain very much in full character the whole day, making sure the children get to experience a truly memorable day out."
All new Time Travellers are presented with their very own passport to the past and awarded a sticker at each event attended. Once the passport is full, they'll receive a special Time Traveller reward for completing their training!

CAST OF A THOUSAND MARCHES BACK TO KELMARSH HALL
- The greatest event of the summer season is back for its seventh outing -
Now in its seventh consecutive year, English Heritage's 'Festival of History' returns with an even bigger and more spectacular bang to Kelmarsh Hall in Northamptonshire on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 July. With 1,000 historical interpreters, 100 glorious performances commemorating England's past and daily adrenalin pumping World War II tank displays - complete with Hollywood-style special effects - it is easy to see why the Festival is celebrated as Europe's biggest historical event.
New for 2009, and continuing this year's Henry VIII anniversary celebrations, there will be the chance to witness the fervour and danger of a Tudor joust. Splendidly recreated with all the authentic trappings of traditional armour, solid wooden lances and a cast of costumed knights and courtiers, it's a joust sure to get the royal seal of approval. Also at Kelmarsh for the first time is the battleground view of King Henry V's siege lines at Harfleur in 1415. Visitors will be propelled into the frontline of medieval warfare, taking in the sights and sounds of the destroyed walled town and even experience life as a soldier as they try on replica helmets and 'mail' of the time.
Emily Burns, Head of Events at English Heritage, says: "It's by far our blockbuster event of the year. Since its inception seven years ago, the Festival of History has attracted more than 90,000 visitors from across the world, and even has an active Facebook following.
"It's an extraordinary way to spend a summer's weekend. One minute you'll be finding out what the Egyptians did with ants eggs, crocodile dung and sheep fat, all in the name of beauty, and the next you'll be cheering for 'the soldiers of Waterloo', as Wellington's remarkable army, accompanied by impressive Congreves war rocket demonstrations, meet the victors of the Peninsular war. Throughout your visit, you might find yourself trading battle tips with Medieval knights, World War II soldiers and Roman gladiators, and joining in with groups of courtiers as they laugh at the royal jester's antics or admire a Tudor fashion show."
The growing army of young fans will be thrilled with the fantastic range of children's activities this year - kids can get kitted up as their favourite historical characters, try out their acting and dancing skills, and be entertained by story tellers and puppet shows. The introduction of the 'Time Travellers Go.' tent will be sure to appeal to any child, from age five onwards. They can try their hand at a variety of roles, from being a a dashing medieval knight, to joining a Roman drill and learning the secrets of a World War II spy. Once they have been issued with their special 'Time Travellers' passport, there's no looking back as they will be well on their way to an adventure of a lifetime.
As always, the Festival of History presents endless activities, demonstrations and spectacles to keep the entire family entertained throughout a day or weekend-long visit. Enjoy the hair-raising horse race of the Roman games, cheer on your favourite in the Knights' Melee and learn a thing or two as a modern day beautician exchanges beauty tips with a Georgian lady. Visitors, young and old, ranging from the most fervent battle fan to avid fashonistas won't get the chance to utter the words, "We are not amused".
For more information visitors should log onto www.festivalofhistory.org.uk. Visitors who pre-order tickets either online or by calling 0870 333 1183 will automatically be entered into the Golden Ticket draw, for a chance to win some fabulous money can't buy English Heritage prizes, including the ultimate relaxing country weekend in one of their beautiful holiday cottages.
FUTURE INNS CARDIFF LAUNCHES A FLEXIBLE FAMILY BREAK
Future Inns, Cardiff is hoping to attract visitors to the city this summer by launching a range of Family Break packages with key tourist attractions.
According to a recent Visit Britain survey, 90% of UK residents are cutting back their spending as a result of the economic downturn and 45% of people are specifically cutting back on their holiday spend. With this in mind, Future Inns is encouraging people to explore what’s on their doorstep. Being conveniently located in Cardiff Bay, the hotel is in close proximity to some of the most exciting tourist attractions in South Wales, including:
• City Sightseeing Tour
• Doctor Who Exhibition
• Hollywood Bowl
• Techniquest
• Wales Millennium Centre Tour
By working with partner organisations, Future Inns Cardiff has negotiated some fantastic discounts for their guests. The packages are based on affordability, flexibility and availability, allowing families to build their own tailored holiday at affordable prices.
Managing Director of Future Inns, Del Brett, comments: “We recognise that families are looking closer to home this year for their summer holiday and we have put together tailored packages that showcase the many attractions to be found in the Bay. We are excited about building relationships with all the organisations involved and hope to bring the best value to our visitors this summer and beyond.”

Our programme of events over the summer, including The Sound of Music, starring Connie Fisher and Michael Praed, is very exciting and will undoubtedly attract visitors from afar. We hope too that we will capture the imagination of our young visitors on the behind the scenes tour at this magnificent arts centre.”

The open top tour buses stop at all the major attractions and places of interest, allowing passengers to hop on & off as they wish”
Helen Hughes, Marketing and PR Manager at Techniquest says: “Techniquest is a fantastic family day out in the enviable setting of Cardiff Bay. The centre allows children to learn about science and technology in a hands-on environment and parents often find that they learn a thing or two as well. We hope to have record numbers this summer as families take advantage of holidaying at home.”

Families can then keep their costs under £150 by choosing, for example, to take the City Sightseeing guided tour on board an open top double decker bus which includes 10 hop on and hop off stops along the 50 minute journey, then visiting Techniquest, Cardiff’s premier hands on science and technology experience. TAKE A NEW LOOK AT LEEDS: VISIT LEEDS WITH NATIONAL EXPRESS
Do you like to shop ‘til you drop? Then why not try a city break in Leeds?
With a Harvey Nichols department store, designer boutiques, markets and nearly five miles of shopping in all, where could be a better place for a little retail therapy? It’s so outstanding that the Rough Guide to Britain has named shopping in Leeds as one of their top 30 things to do in Britain. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants too in which to draw breath and eat something delectable between shopping sprees. So if you’re looking for a new look, then why not take a new look at Leeds?
If culture is more to your liking, then Leeds could also be the place for you. From opera to music hall, ballet to contemporary dance, repertory theatre to west end shows, Leeds is a thriving cultural hub. It is a rare example of a city which even today can boast of its own repertory theatre, opera house and resident ballet company, whilst Leeds Art Gallery houses a notable collection of contemporary British art.
Later in July, Leeds will host one of the uk’s largest outdoor music events, the ‘Party in the Park’ at Temple Newsam. Acts so far confirmed for this music extravaganza on Sunday 26 July include Alesha Dixon and Beverley Knight. A regular bus service runs from the train station close to the Temple Newsam site, with extra services running on the day of the event.
If history and heritage is more up your street then look no further than the elegant Victoria Quarter, The Calls, the Corn Exchange, or Salt's Mill, a model Victorian village which is now a world heritage site and home of the 1853 Hockney Gallery. The city of Leeds has more listed buildings than neighbouring York, in fact more than any English city apart from London.
Leeds is also the perfect base from which to explore the picturesque Yorkshire Dales, only 20 miles away.
So for a change of scenery and a weekend away, look no further than Leeds. It is as Conde Nast Traveller cited 'The best English city to visit outside London'.
