Grand Hotel de Bordeaux

L’Opéra National de Bordeaux and Grand Hôtel de Bordeaux & Spa were both designed and built on La Place de La Comédie square by the acclaimed architect Victor Louis in the 18th century. The relationship between these two institutions started with an artistic and musical programme, launched in 2011. Today their geographical and cultural heritage brings them together again with ‘Sleeping Beauty’.

The ‘Sleeping Beauty’ package at Grand Hôtel de Bordeaux & Spa starts from €444 (approx. £320), including taxes, and is available from 18 to 31 December 2015, welcoming guests for Christmas, New Year’s Eve and festive weekend breaks in Bordeaux.

Created by the charismatic mixologists at the bar, the creamy and dreamy ‘Santa’s Treat’ is a sumptuous blend of Frangelico, Amaretto Disaronno, chocolate liqueur, espresso, homemade toffee sauce & double cream.

Served in a martini glass dipped in toffee sauce, Santa’s Treat is only available until 30 December 2015.
Santa’s Treat is available in addition to Festive Lunches on most days in December, at the hotel’s double AA Rosette awarded restaurant. Two delectable courses cost just £19.95 per person and three courses are £22.50 per person.

The Boxing Day celebration lunch brings a stress-free way to spend 26 December with family and friends, with the three-course meal costing just £45 per adult and £22.50 per child, with under 3’s complimentary.

Get crafting this Christmas with the National Trust

The National Trust is providing plenty of chances to create some Christmas crafts with a difference this festive season.

Families can choose from a variety of fun activities, from stepping back in time to make Edwardian decorations to exploring the elves’ Christmas workshop. Or, head outdoors to tick off one of your ‘50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾’ with some wild art or get as messy as you want as you bake up some tasty festive treats in an atmospheric kitchen from another age.

There’s plenty on offer for adults too, with artisan workshops ranging from botanical illustration to wreath making and traditional baking methods. Every one of these workshops will help you take home something inspired by beautiful surroundings.

Every visit to one of these places helps the National Trust’s work as a charity to look after special places, for ever, for everyone. The remaining events include:

Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden, North Yorkshire
The elves’ Christmas workshop, 19 – 23, 26 – 29 December, 1pm – 4pm
The elves have been busy helping Father Christmas at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal. Walk through the elegant water garden of sparkling ponds and frozen statues to Swanley Grange, where kids can write letters to send off from the twinkly post office. All writing materials will all be provided to write a Christmas wish list, including envelopes and stamps. There will also be the chance to make a glittery snowflake fit for any fir tree. Drop in after Christmas to write a thank you letter to Father Christmas.

Beningbrough Hall, Gallery and Gardens, North Yorkshire
Festive Artrageous, 19 – 20 December, 1pm – 3pm
Festive family art workshops will be running at Beningbrough Hall throughout the Christmas season. Decorate a Christmas bauble for the tree, make a stocking to hang at the end of the bed for Father Christmas or create a reindeer sock puppet just for fun. Some activities will carry a small charge. See the baroque mansion transformed into a winter wonderland and step inside the richly decorated rooms to get some inspiration for your crafts.

Cracker Factory Christmas, 19 – 22 December, call property for times
This former Tudor palace is richly decorated for a country house family Christmas, taking you on a historic journey through Christmas past at The Vyne. Sudbury Hall and the National Trust Museum of Childhood, Derbyshire
Children’s chocolate cookie calendar workshop, 3 – 20 December, 10.30am – 3pm
Kids can create a calendar for the New Year at this hands-on workshop. Be sure to explore the Museum of Childhood beforehand to gather inspiration from fun toys and cartoons from the past. Discover something for everyone, from toys that capture the imagination to ones that spark old memories. There’ll be a chance to tuck into warming hot chocolate and cookies during the workshop.

Edinburgh New Town Cookery School Christmas Ideas
Whether it’s taking the stress out of creating a culinary Christmas, finding a way to keep the kids amused while doing last-minute Christmas shopping, or even a quick and easy gift idea, Edinburgh New Town Cookery School has the answer.

A range of courses with a focus on festive – from Christmas canapé demonstrations to Easy Entertaining – are designed to give everyone the skills they need to be the host with the most and enjoy the party season. Designed for ages 9 – 12 , children will be taught cooking skills using the best seasonal ingredients, cooking dishes that they can easily recreate at home. They will be taught, and encouraged, to clear up and wash up as they go – something that every parent will appreciate! They will cook a simple lunch and they will take some of their cooked treats home.

English Heritage are offering 2 for 1 entry for visitors to celebrate the season

This Twixmas, families looking to escape the house over the holidays will be able to explore more of England’s heritage than ever before. Between Christmas and New Year, English Heritage will be opening the doors to more historic properties than ever before, allowing families across the country to burn off pent-up festive steam in the most incredible of surroundings, from spectacular winter gardens and landscapes, to atmospheric castles and ornately decorated houses.

A total of 22 of England’s most important historic sites will be open between Sunday 27 December and Thursday 31 December, including, Dover Castle in Kent, Eltham Palace in London and Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire. Plus to ensure grandparents, siblings and any extended family can enjoy the day out, English Heritage is also offering two-for-one admission to all visitors throughout this period.

The two-for-one admission is applicable at all the sites above, excluding Stonehenge, Osborne and Kenwood, and applies to all member and non-member admission tickets from Sunday 27 to Thursday 31 December 2015. Osborne will be running Festive Guided Tours of Queen Victoria’s former home, while families visited Kenwood can enjoy craft activities on site.

108 Brasserie – 108 will be offering a range of menus and special events over the festive period including a festive advent calendar of treats from December 1st, a Festive Afternoon Tea (that comes in classic, healthy or indulgent) and a heart-warming Christmas Day Feast from executive chef Russell Ford. For New Year’s Eve guests can indulge in a 3 course menu featuring classic seasonal British fare.

Landseer and TownHouse – The Doyle Collection’s other restaurants (at The Bloomsbury and The Kensington, respectively) will also be offering exceptional festive menus, including a Christmas Gala Dinner (December 25th) Menu at Landseer and two excellent 7 course tasting menus at both sites.

Holborn Dining Room – As well as three festive menus at varying price points, Holborn Dining Room and head chef Calum Franklin are offering a very special Christmas Day Menu. For New Year’s Eve, Holborn Dining Room will be celebrating with cover-band Beat from 11pm-1am, with DJ’s either side, alongside a private fireworks display at midnight and unlimited access to Holborn’s Delicatessen sweet factory.


Tapas Revolution – Tapas Revolution will be celebrating New Year Eve’s with a delicious Spanish feast. Priced at £45 per person, the meal includes seven tapas dishes, a Platos (sharing dish) and Cafe y Licor. You’ll also have the chance to welcome in the New Year with the Spanish tradition of ‘Las doce uvas de la suerte’ (the 12 lucky grapes) by eating a grape with each chime of midnight. If you manage all of them before the last chime then you’re guaranteed a lucky 2016!

Celebrate New Year’s Eve at Dirty Bones Carnaby
Dirty Bones Carnaby are inviting guests to join them in celebrating the last few hours of the year before 2016 rolls in. With tickets for early birdies as well as party-all-nighters, on arrival guests of the two ‘DIRTY NYE’ events will receive a signature Top Dog cocktail (Finlandia vodka, fresh strawberry, Chambord, lemon and prosecco) or craft beer, before sharing a selection of starters, such as Hot Wings; Charred Padron Peppers; and Deep Fried Mac Balls. These will be followed by a choice of either The Dirty Eye (Boston rib eye steak, Béarnaise sauce), Dirty Bass (Sea bass, chimichurri) or Get Baked (Smoked aubergine, rich tomato, mozzarella and parmesan skillet), with classic Dirty Bones sides to share. Celebrate New Year’s Eve at German Gymnasium
The newly opened German Gymnasium in Kings Cross is inviting guests to celebrate New Year’s Eve with an exclusive ticketed event including food, music and entertainment. Executive Chef Bjoern Wassmuth’s one-off New Year’s Eve menu will include an amuse bouche of Roasted chestnut cream and truffle foam, followed by a three course dinner with starters such as Cured salmon with sourdough croutons, crisp shallot rings, yuzu crème fraiche and dill foam; main courses including Roasted venison loin with butternut squash, Brussels sprouts and spiced chocolate sauce; and for dessert Citrus infused cheesecake with blackberry compote and pistachio ice cream. There will be live music from the five-piece band, Nocturne, and a late-night party with resident DJ Dave Delgado playing Berlin beats until 2am. Celebrate New Year’s Eve at the newly re-opened Sartoria, Mayfair
This year Chef Patron Francesco Mazzei will be serving a decadent set menu boasting some of his signature dishes for parties of up to eight guests. Those who would like an earlier sitting will be able to indulge in a lovely three course menu priced at £55 per person; and those who would prefer a longer, more sumptuous affair, will be able to choose from a four-course menu priced at £95 or a five-course menu priced at £110. Dishes include Steamed langoustines, slow cooked pork belly, pan fried scallops, n’cantarata sauce; Truffled tagliolini; Wild turbot, artichokes, saffron and clam sauce and a Roasted veal fillet, winter vegetables, sage and pumpkin mash. New Year’s Eve party at Blanchette, Soho
Enjoy an extended New Year’s Eve at Soho favourite, Blanchette with doors open until 6am. The quintessentially Parisian bistro will be serving the usual a la carte menu as well as some delicious specials, including scallops. Celebrate New Year’s Eve with Soho favourite, Ember Yard
This year, Chef Director Ben Tish and Head Chef Jacques Fourie, have created a delicious menu with matching wine and cocktails. Dishes include Truffled duck liver parfait with picked chestnuts and Grilled Venison haunch with celeriac, walnut and braised kale, followed by Slow roasted beef sirloin/ Beef fore rib with a variety of sides to choose from including, Potato and truffle gratin and Josper roasted Jerusalem artichokes with smoked butter and garlic. New Year’s Eve Masked Ball at Bluebird
Following last year’s success, Chelsea favourite Bluebird will be hosting its second annual Masked Ball. The night will kick off at 7pm with champagne and canape reception in the main bar, followed by a decadent 3-course meal and a delicious cheese station. Islington’s Almeida celebrates in style
Islington’s neighbourhood restaurant Almeida will be offering a luxurious four course tasting menu priced at £45. The menu will showcase dishes such as Scallop and crab tortellini, Shellfish bisque and Venison wellington, beetroot, creamed cabbage, green peppercorns and picked pear. After dinner, celebrate in Almeida’s bar and enjoy the innovative cocktail list, made with seasonal herbs and infusions grown in Head Chef’s Tommy Boland’s ‘urban garden’.

Dinner and dancing at New Street Grill for New Year
Celebrate New Year’s Eve in the city with New Street Grill’s four course set menu including canapés and bubbles on arrival. The indulgent menu from Head Chef Barry Macmillan includes dishes such as the Chateaubriand to share with sautéed pink fur potatoes, creamed spinach, béarnaise & peppercorn sauce. Celebrate New Year at Café Royal
At Café Royal this year, the festive season is being celebrated in style with a lavish New Year’s Eve party showcasing Café Royal’s bohemian and hedonistic history. For £125 per person, Executive Chef Vivek Singh and Head Chef Rakesh Ravindran have created a five-course menu that will showcase the very best of Indian feasting.
